Sustainable Development & Energy What is sustainable development? ‘Sustainable development is development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’ What does this mean in terms of energy? Which of the energy resources that we use could be classed as a sustainable resource? Is there any difference in sustainable energy resources and renewable energy resources?

Exercise: Resources

Geothermal Energy

Geothermal power station located in Kenya. Geothermal Energy Advantages: Renewable. Cheap running costs when set-up. No air pollution*. Disadvantages: Geothermal power station located in Kenya. Few areas suitable. Expensive to set-up. Image copyright JSH Education Ltd Photographer - Paul Monaghan *Some geothermal power stations allow the steam to escape and the gas hydrogen sulfide can be emitted. Often needs combining with other energy resources to generate electricity as the water reaching the surface is not hot enough. Volcanic regions are often unstable.

Exercise: Efficiency Calculation A kettle is supplied with 120J of electrical energy. It converts this into useful thermal energy at an efficiency of 0.5 (or 50%). How much thermal energy does the kettle produce? Efficiency = desired output energy/total input energy Desired output energy = efficiency x total input energy Desired output energy = 0.5 x 120J Desired output energy = 60J

Exercise: Energy Efficient Bulbs Different bulbs have different efficiencies. Which of the bulbs below is the most efficient? Input energy: 200J Input energy: 140J Desired output energy: 36J Desired output energy: 91J Efficiency: ____ 0.18 Efficiency: ____ 0.65 This bulb is the most efficient
