List the 5 Themes of Geography Warm-Up: List the 5 Themes of Geography

Egypt; The Nile River

The Nile River Egyptians settled along the Nile River valley in northeast Africa. World’s longest river- 4,145 miles long. Runs south to north from central Africa  Mediterranean Sea. Last 600 miles is Egypt.

River is only green area in the Sahara desert. Delta- fan shaped fertile land where it branches out before it reaches the sea.

Egypt’s two problems: 96% of Egypt is barren deserts- only crops grown around Nile.

2. Very little rainfall. Coast along Med. receives around 8”/ year Around Cairo receives about 1”/ year South of Cairo receives less than 1” / year

Cycle of the Nile River Flood each year in July Floods caused by rains in Central Africa and melting snow in mountains.

Floods leave behind rich, black soil for crops.

Gifts of Nile River Transportation of goods River runs S. to N. Winds blow N. to S.  transportation in both directions

2. Agriculture 3. Fish and waterfowl.

4. Papyrus reeds  material for baskets, boats, sandals, paper material.

Cataracts- waterfalls along the Nile that protected Egyptians from invasion.
