DIVISION DIVISIÓN English Spanish NEPO Instructional Video (Division)

INSTRUCTIONS / INSTRUCCIONES To divide, the instrument is divided into 3 sections as shown. Para dividir, el instrumento se divide en 3 secciones. Division can be done by subtracting groups of equal numbers. The left section is for the dividend, or the number being divided. In this section equal groups (divisor) are subtracted from the dividend until left with 0. The middle section is for the divisor, or the number to be divided by. The divisor is the number which will be repeatedly subtracted from the dividend. The right section is where you will mark or tally the number of times you have subtracted to show your final answer. DIVIDEND Show starting number Subtract equal groups DIVISOR Number to subtract QUOTIENT Each time you subtract a group, add one counter # # 1,000 100 10 1 100 10 1 100,000 10,000 1,000 100 10 1 NOTE: With the division of the instrument, the place value changes as follows: ATENCIÓN: Con la división del instrumento, el valor posicional cambia de aquella forma:

LET’s DIVIDE! Web Based NEPO: http://www.nepo.csta.mx/uso Practice division using the online NEPO at http://www.nepo.csta.mx/uso OR Use the following slides to input numbers you would like the students to divide Web Based NEPO: http://www.nepo.csta.mx/uso

32 ÷ 8 21 ÷ 3 20 ÷ 4 32 ÷ 8 Divide 32 into groups of 8 On the NEPO you need to SUBTRACT groups of 8 21 ÷ 3 Divide 21 into groups of 3 On the NEPO you need to SUBTRACT groups of 3 20 ÷ 4 Divide 20 into groups of 4 On the NEPO you need to SUBTRACT groups of 4 Make sure the students aren’t just representing the answer on their NEPO by doing the mental math Make sure the students are actually going through the subtraction of groups on the NEPO You can introduce the visual of arrays and explain how division is just a division/separation of equal groups.
