Mississippi benchmark 5a – Adding and subtracting nine-digit whole numbers with and without regrouping.

Vocabulary Addends – Are numbers being added. Sum – Is the answer to an addition problem. Minuend – Is the number being subtracted from. (top number) Subtrahend – Is the number being subtracted. (bottom number) Difference – Is the answer to an subtraction problem. Regrouping – Is when you borrow a number from a higher place value or carry a number to a higher place value.

Subtraction with regrouping 11 6 1 11  Regrouping/Borrowing 721 - 158 / / / 5 6 3

Addition with regrouping  Regrouping/Carrying 739 + 274 10 1 1 1 3
