BUDO project BUsiness Driven plant Optimization platform ProcessIT.EU

Peter Lingman, Ph.D. Optimation AB, Sweden Industry partner in ProcessIT.EU

BUDO - Business Driven plant Optimization platform VISION: 100% utilization of dynamic and explicit models for the management of the plant automation system. Model based control , plant wide control, and optimization are well established and quite often applied in the process industry However, the integration between the different models is very low (MBC, Safety, training, plant configuration) The information embedded in one model is not shared in an optimal way with other models (one application-one model) Furthermore, the life cycle management of all these models is extremely resource demanding and therefore mostly neglected i.e. model performance is strongly deteriorating soon after commissioning A typical system is developed in uniquely optimized layers where no cross-layer optimization has been applied In order to improve the situation significantly a practical model based optimization platform with high industrial acceptance needs to developed 3

Technology & Market Innovation Overall project objectives Improved plant utilization by continuous plant optimization Efficient energy utilization by continuous plant optimization Complexity management by merging issues of optimization, safety, and training into one modelling framework. View the model as a service provider! Enabling the integration to existing SOA architectures. Increased design efficiency in automation projects System-level modelling that supports optimal design of automation system (object oriented, multi-objective optimization) Increased information sharing between different modelling domains (CFD, FEM, MBS, etc.) Main focus is ASP4 with obvious connections to ASP1 and ASP8

Next steps First Indication of Consortium: Countries involved: The establishment of the consortium is starting up. What type of partners that the consortium shall consist of is being defined. A working group within the European network ProcessIT.EU is leading the work. Countries involved: The ProcessIT.EU working group is currently set up with partners from Sweden and Finland. E g Industry – Research collaboration centres and universities. Primarily partners that has participated in the ProcessIT.EU will be invited (if they have relevant competences) complemented with other relevant partners Industrial partners: From industry we are searching for partners that have a well established usage of model based development of automation and control systems. Since practical application is of high importance in the BUDO project we are also searching for partners that see benefits in providing a “test bench”. We also need partners within the area of development of simulation software. It would also be interseting to explore posibillities to co-operate between different domains of the industry, e.g. automotive and process industries.
