“The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Meyers

OBJECTIVES: Students will identify and explain different types of conflict that exists in literature. Students will analyze character, character traits, & characterization in literature. Students will recognize and identify the sequence of plot in fiction. Students will use inferencing strategies while reading.

Pre Read Do Now: When you hear and think of the word ‘treasure’, what associations come to mind? In other words, what do you think of?

Checking for Comprehension: Read the first five (5) paragraphs of the story. Identify and explain what the conflict in the story is thus far.

Vocabulary in Context The word tenement in the last paragraph on pg. 9 means, Alley Convenience store Church Building

Checking For Comprehension: Character’s motivation—the driving force that makes a character act and behave in a particular way. What prompted, or motivated Greg to run into an old, abandoned, dark building?

Read pages 11 & 12. We are introduced to Lemon Brown Read pages 11 & 12. We are introduced to Lemon Brown. Create a characterization chart on his character. Lemon Brown

Making Predictions & Inferences: We learn that Lemon Brown has treasure and that ‘bad boys’ have been looking for it. Predict what this treasure might be.

Comprehension Check: Read pg. 14. In your own words, summarize the events that transpired on this page in regards to Lemon, Greg, and the ‘bad boys’.

Comprehension Check Read the middle of page 15, “Here you hold this…” to the top of page 16, “…Ain’t that something.” We learn what Lemon Brown’s treasure is. What is it and why is it so valuable to him?

Inferring and Drawing Conclusions: The final sentence of the story reads, “Greg pushed the button over the bell marked Ridley, thought of the lecture he knew his father would give him, and smiled.” In your own words, what is your interpretation of the ending? Why does he smile? Explain.
