Jose Marti’s Immediate Family Mariano Marti and Leonor Perez Cabrera had 7 daughters and Jose Marti whom was the oldest. He later married Carmen Zayas Bazan. They had one son named Jose Marti Zayas Bazan.

Jose’s Own Timeline January 28, 1853 Jose Julian Marti y Perez was born. 1868- Marti begins to express his interest in Cuba’s fight for independence. 1869-1870- Sentenced to six years of hard labor. Then is deported from Havana and sent to Espana. 1871- Has a book published called “El Presidio en Cuba”(Political Prison in Cuba). He also finds work in a Madrid University as a tutor. 1873- Publishes “La Republica Espanola ante la Revolucion Cubana” (The Spanish Republic Before the Cuban Revolution). 1874- He receives the degree of Bachelor of Civil and Canon Law. Then enrolls in all subjects at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities and passes with outstanding grades.

Jose’s Timeline Continued 1875- Goes to Paris to sail to Mexico to publish a magazine called Revista Universal (Universal Magazine), participates in a debate, and writes a play. 1877- He goes back to Havana under a different name. From there he goes to Guatemala City and is appointed as a professor at the Central School of Guatemala. Writes a drama but today we don’t know where it is. Also he gets married to Carmen Zayas Bazan. 1878- He resigns from the Central School of Guatemala. After traveling a little while, he ends up in Havana with his wife. Three months later Carmen has little Jose Marti Zayas Bazan. 1879- Marti is appointed Secretary of the Literary Section of the Guanabacoa Lyceum. After “Cuba’s little war” begins, Marti is accused of conspiracy and is deported again to Espana.

Continued… 1880-Marti leaves Espana to go to New York. There he makes a speech in front of he “Steck Hall”. He publishes an article in The Hour and writes the “Proclamation of the New York Revolutionary Committee”. 1881- Marti is invited to become correspondent of El Partido Liberal de Mexico. Sends first article to La Opinion Publica, of Uruguay. Marti also writes an article warning Latin America to La Nacion in Buenos Aires. 1890- Marti becomes a teacher for Negro workers. Also he is Appointed Argentine and Paraguayan Consul in New York. And he is appointed Uruguayan Rep. to the International Monetary Conference in Washington and Chairman of the Spanish-American Literary Society of New York. 1891-”Versos Sencillos” (Simple Verses) is published. Resigns as consul of Argentina and Uruguay and post as Chairman of the Spanish-American Literary Society. He visits Tampa at an invitation of the “Ignacio Agramonte Club.

1892- He attends a meeting of the club “Patria y Libertad” (homeland and freedom). Jose Marti also founds the Cuban Revolutionary Party, which he had been organizing for two years. He submits it into the Tampa Patriotic League and it is approved unanimously. He is elected delegate of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and tours Florida to gain support for it. While in Tampa a plot to poison him fails. 1894-Marti intervenes in a conflict in the Key West. Later that year he organizes the Fernandina Plan. 1895- As the war for Cuba’s independence is about to begin the U.S. captures three ships. In Santo Domingo Marti sign the Manifesto of Montecristi. On April 1 he writes a letter which is considered his last will and testament. In La Mejorana, Marti and two others decide on a war strategy. Marti is elected as supreme leader of the revolution abroad and in the nonmilitary matters. May 19- Jose Marti is killed in his first appearance on the battlefield at Dos Rios in eastern Cuba. 1853-1895
