The Sistine Chapel By Kate Davey

About the Sistine chapel The Sistine chapel is in the Vatican city in Rome , Italy It was built between 1473 – 1481 for pope Sixtus IV It is the pope’s own chapel

The inside of the Sistine chapel The inside of the Sistine chapel is amazing ! The floor is a beautifully coloured marble. The lower parts of the walls are made to look like gold and silver cloth. it is richly decorated and there are fabulous paintings all over the place with beautiful vibrant colours .

The outside of the Sistine chapel information Sistine chapel St peters You may think that since the inside of the Sistine chapel is so highly decorative that the outside would be too. Well it actually is not . It is quite plain but that is because it is right next to st . peters basicalla . St . Peters basicalla is also in the Vatican city. It is where a lot of important masses are held . It too has a lot of famous artwork . The pope holds his weekly audience from here.

Michelangelo Michelangelo played a big part when the Sistine chapel was being decorated . In 1505 pope Julius ii asked Michelangelo to paint the ceiling but he did not want to be a painter he was a sculpter . Three years later he decided to paint the ceiling it took three years to paint. For those three years he stood on a high platform with his arms stretched above his head. Because he painted onto wet plaster the smell and the heat was terrible . He wrote a poem on how sick he was. He painted paintings which tell us stories to help people understand about Jesus and the Roman catholic church.

Fun facts ! Once a pope dies the college of cardinals meet in the Sistine chapel to elect a new pope It is used for important masses and ceremonies In Italian it is known as cappella Sistina It is dedicated to the virgin Mary

Swiss Guards The Swiss guards guard the Sistine chapel and all the other buildings in the Vatican city . They live in barracks within the Vatican city . On the 6th of may each year new recruits join the Swiss army . Can anyone apply ? No – there are very strict conditions for entry You have to be male All guards need to be at least 5 foot 8 inches tall You have to be under 30 years old And all guards must be a graduate from the Swiss army You have to be Swiss And you also have to be a Roman Catholic
