Hillside Core Values Parents/ Guardians and Staff January 31, 2017

Background Goal: to gain a sense of the core values parents/ guardians and staff see as most important to seed while a child attends Hillside and to provide guidance as Hillside chooses a SEL program BLT brainstormed values under 4 potential pillars –Learning, Interpersonal, Individuality and Work Ethic Survey presented each pillar as a group. Participants viewed one group at a time Values within each pillar were randomized upon each view to help control for order bias Survey data was analyzed as a full sample (guardians/ parents and staff) and also broken down by key stakeholder group Perspectives of parents of older children (3-4) vs. parents of younger children (k-2) Perspectives of parents/ guardians vs. staff members

Response Breakdown Survey in the field for ~week. 216 parents responded. ~ 40 have 2+ children in multiple grades. Remarkably even representation across grades 43 staff members took the survey 18 working with k-2 14 working across grades k-4 11 working with 3-4

A note on Stakeholder Perspectives Parents – regardless of the grade(s) of their child(ren) seem to share uniform perspectives on Hillside’s potential values Parents vs. Staff also seem to find merit in many of the same values that fall under the Learning pillar, but seem to differ in how they approach/ view the other three value groups

Respect The Pillars – A Potential Cornerstone Valued explore in two group, top box for both When not offered in a group, often a ‘write in’ vote Seems a shared value across all key stakeholder groups May suggest value in considering SE programs that place Respect as a central value Either for one values pillar or as a central thought across pillars

The Pillars – Learning (Aligns across Stakeholders) Top Box Love of Learning Problem Solving Not Afraid to Make Mistakes (Responsible Risk Taking?) Curiosity Creativity Collaboration Thinking outside the box Asking Questions Inspired Risk Taking Being hands on

The Pillars – Individuality -- Full Sample (staff perspective varies) Top Box Respect Confidence Accountability Acceptance Initiative Courage Flexible Authenticity Adaptability Honor Value a ‘write in’ response in another grouping. Boosts weighting in this group

The Pillars – Individuality -- Full Sample vs. Staff Perspective Top Box Respect Confidence Top Box Respect Accountability For staff, Respect a even more dominant value. Accountability moves into top box and Confidence seen as somewhat less important Accountability Acceptance Initiative Courage Flexible Authenticity Adaptability Confidence Acceptance Initiative Courage Flexible Authenticity Adaptability Honor Honor
