Investigation or Clarification of Problem

Context & Objective Context Client Give a description of your client? Likes, dislikes, etc Ages, ethnicity, culture, etc Why do they need this product? What could help this product become successful? Problem Put example photographs of the problem here. E.g. example nightlights/examples of dark scary rooms. Add brief captions to the pictures explaining them! Client Needs Design Brief I have been asked to design and make a ……………………………… Put the 5 W’s into full sentences. Do you have a theme you want to use?

Initial Specification Must Should Could You must come up with initial specification points which are MUST, SHOULD and COULD. There should be 10 bullet points per heading and each should be justified. Example 1. The stool must be able to be knocked down and packaging in a box. Aim of the task Example 1. The stool should be adjustable in height This will make it suitable for a large range of customers Example 1. The stool could be made from recycled materials This will make the stool more sustainable.

Factor Analysis and Research Plan Social, moral and environmental issues – What social and moral issues will need to be considers? Will the product consider the 6R’s. Factor Analysis Client – what are their needs, likes, dislikes Safety – what legal issues need to be considered? Aesthetics/theme - Is that a theme/style which would be suitable for this product? What inspiration can be used for this product? Existing products – what is already on the market? Analysing the brief what will I need to find out? What problems will I have to solve? Research Plan What? Why? Where? What areas/information do you need to find out? Why do you need to find this information out? How will to help your project? Where/How will you ge this information? Materials/finishes – What materials and finishes would be should to use for this type of product and why? Function – what are the key functions of the product? Components – what key components will the product need. Are they standard bought components? Processes/manufacturing methods – What types of processes will need to be considered to make the product? Scale – What is the size of the product? What scale of production will be used to make the product and why?

Product Analysis You will need to find 6 existing products and complete the table. You will also what to refer back to you initial MUST, SHOULD, COULD criteria to see how successful the products are. Product image and name Materials & Components Manufacturing Techniques Aesthetics Price Size Does it Function Well How well does it meet the 4 R’s Overall conclusion

Client/Expert research Here you need to contact or identify an expert/client/company that you can discuss and get feedback from throughout the project. It could be in the form of a letter/email/photos/survey/questionnaire. What to take forward?

Dimensions, anthropometrics and ergonomics You should use photo to show human interaction with existing products similar to the one you will design. You can annotation these photos to highlight positive and negatives as well as key dimensions which need to be considered. You should explain how a human will need to interact with the product you will be designing. What will you need to consider to make the product comfortable and easy for a person to use. Dimension Anthropometric Data You need to gather specific anthro data about your target market and the dimensions which are relevant to how it can be used. You will then need to use this data to determine suitable overall dimensions for your product to fit into What to take forward?

Wider issues Product area to be considered Social/Moral Issues Environmental Issues Target Market Aesthetics Function Materials & Components Finishing Manufacturing Processes Product Life-cycle

Research Evaluation & Design Specification What you need to find out? This will come from your research plan. What were the results for what you found? Specification points How I will test this Purpose All sentences must start with “my product must/should”. Do not be over specific. Only write general things. Function Quality Components Aesthetics/Theme e.g. “My lamp must use bright colours as the target market is children between 3-10. Bright colours will attract the target market to the lamp making it a viable commercial product. Target market e.g. “ I will give my lamp to a group of children and record their reactions to it. I could conduct a survey or interview with the children to gauge their response and the lamps success. Sustainability and product life-cycle User requirements Processes Ergonomics Material and components requirement Scale of production Construction techniques Manufacturing/ tools

Development of Design Proposal

Concepts These should be quick basic 3D sketches. You should come up with 15-20 different ideas Each sketch should be different, experimental, realistic, solve the problem and function you have been researching in your project Annotations are not needs but you may want one or two to highlight how the product works.

Design Ideas Each design must have: sketch assembly drawings, annotate materials, material properties making it suitable, finishes, positives and negatives, refer to specification and spec check box for each design Each design must show how you intend to manufacture it! What techniques and processes you will use! Each design must be numbered. You can also use Sketchup to create the ideas Make sure you have annotated about all of these things Specification points Purpose Aesthetics Target market Size Ergo/ anthro materials Manu Safety/ regs Enviro life cycle Social YOU MUST explain if each design meets what you have written in the specification. Use a spec check box (example on left) to tick them off if needed!

Development of Chosen Design Using a combination of sketching, 3D modelling and Sketchup you need to develop the different aspects and components for you product. This should be over several pages and should see your product develop and change but not be completely redesigned. You should get client feedback through, make scale models of the full product and/or full size components of the product to test their function and whether they would in situ/with other products. ALL DECISIONS YOU MAKE AS YOU DEVELOP MUST BE FULLY EXPLAINED.

Alternative Materials and Finishes Consider your product being made from materials other than those you have chosen. What alternative materials could you have chosen? How would this have affected the methods of construction and possible mass production strategies? What compromises did you have to make when selecting the materials for your product?

Final Design It must be on SKETCH UP Design proposal How was each specification point met through the final design Purpose Function Performance requirement Quality Components Form/ aesthetics Target market Sustainability and product life-cycle User requirements Processes Ergonomics Material and components requirement Scale of production Construction techniques Manufacturing/ tools It must be on SKETCH UP You must show the product from different angles, show different components, different fixings/fittings. You must annotate the design to explain each part. You must explain what you have changed from your development to help you achieve that design.

Orthographic Drawing Cutting List You must have 3 views, front, side, top. They must be to a scale 1:2 1:4 They should be done using CAD Cutting List

Manufacture/Modelling

Question/Quality check Flow chart Create a flow chart to describe the manufacture of your product. You must try to use all of the shapes available. Start/Finish Question/Quality check Process/Step Predicted Time Changes/ modifications

Manufacture Plan Stage Materials Used Tools/ equipment, processes Safety Procedures How will Quality Control/ tolerance tests be carried out Reviewing quality control/ tolerance tests Problems During making/planning Solutions/Changes made. Photographic Evidence. Manufacturing the base of the lamp MDF Metal Rule, fret saw, belt sander, glass paper, hole saw, pillar The fret saw, pillar drill and belt sander are dangerous workshop machines. When using them I wore goggles and an apron and only used them after having proper training. I made sure I had no loose items that could get caught in the belt sander or pillar drill. The hole that has been cut must be within +/- 1mm of the desired diameter and will be checked with a calliper. The base must be checked for smooth finishing that will give no splinters. The hole cut had a 21mm diameter which is +1mm larger than the desired hole, therefore the hole is reasonable in quality. The base was perfectly smooth and has no sharp edges or possible splinters.

Branding, Marketing and Packaging Branding and Market You need to consider how you will brand and market your product. Do you need to create a logo or slogan? Does it already fit into a brand? Who are you trying to sell to? What advertising will you use? Social media? TV? leaflets? Packaging You need to consider how your product will be packaged. Do you need to use eco friendly packaging? Do you need to use a brand/logo on the packaging? Do you need to include instructions on how to use/assembly your product? What will the packaged product look like? Sketch it.

Industrial and Commercial Suitability Production type How will the design of the product need to change? How processes and machinery would be used to manufacture the product to this scale? One-off This should be a detailed explanation of any modifications you would need to make so that the product could be made to this scale. You many want to include sketches. This should be a detailed explanation of the processes and tooling you would use to make the modified product to this scale. Batch Mass

Testing & Evaluation

Evaluation Evaluation of the design process Final evaluation Evaluation against specification Evaluation of the design process Final evaluation

Testing Strategies Questionnaire/Survey Question Type of test (these should have been outlines in the design spec) Why it is needed? How you will test it? Evidence of testing? Questionnaire/Survey Question Why it needs to asked?

Testing Results and Analysis Result of testing

Improvements & Modifications Using the results of your testing and evaluation suggest some possible modifications to your final product. Use sketches and CAD to explain and demonstrate these changes.
