Hofstede’s six dimensions Individualism Vs. Collectivism

In this scene, Todd meets auntie Ji for the first time, they are talking about Todd’s personal circumstance. When she go to aunt ji guest house and she started to ask a private questions like what is your father do, “what is your salary, and did you married?”. This shows collectivism, When aunt ji says: “you should be married”, people in this society encourage to do the best for society without thinking about the person it self. Also, this sense show the individualism when Todd says with uncomfortable answer , “I’m not ready yet”. The collectivism love to join person to group and don’t think about privacy question.(“Cherry, n.d.”)

This sense is also showing the individualism and collectivism between Puro and Todd. At the way he took them to hotel, Puro changes the plans from Gharapuri Palace Hotel to Auntie Ji’s guest house because he said that Gharapuri Palace Hotel is very lonely. As collectivism way he says “I will take you to Auntie Ji’s guest house. She will take care of you better than your own real mother.” When individualist Todd said that he would prefer to go to his hotel, but Puro insists and says: “We go to Aunti Ji’s. . You’ll not be lonely there”. The collectivism culture shows the strength relationship between people and how they can help each other. However, individualism shows vice versa. (“Cherry, n.d.”)

In this scene, Todd is on train and there is no space, the boy give Todd his seat and after that he set on Todd’s lab. Todd comes from individualist culture so, he see that this is private personal space of a person and they see that this my seat. However, the boy feel comfortable because he see that this is our seat and he was also attentive to the needs of Todd. (“Cherry, n.d.”)

The culture with low power distance sees that supervisor and employees are almost equal for example, when Todd speaks to his boss Dave by saying “Hi Dave” only. On the other hand, high power distance respect the people on order there position and they have large gaps in compensation and authority, for instance when Indian employees said “Mr. Todd” depending on his hierarchy.(“2015”).

Aisha face an uncertainty avoidance in her culture Aisha face an uncertainty avoidance in her culture. Which is mean : they need to follow the rules and structures without expecting the changes . For example, when Aisha said:“A girl in my position has her whole life mapped out in front of her.” Also, she explain to Todd how she face a lot of barriers to complete her university. She was always being told: “Aisha, you can’t go to university” or “Aisha, you can’t work in a call center—what will people say?”. Aisha see that everything she have done, she have to fight for, because the rule in India is very tuff with women. (“Smit, 2012”)

High Context Vs. Low Context

In this sense, Todd shows his low context reaction, when he doesn’t hide his dissatisfaction with the call center’s high MPI, then he said:“Why is the MPI so bad?”. “Puro, this place is a disaster.” the people from low context culture are direct, informal, context are more important than word, and the time is very important to success job “One’s time is one’s own.” As Todd said: “the average number of minutes per incident spent to resolve each call ”.(“Hall, n.d.”)
