Working Smarter, Not Harder Providing accommodations to students… not increasing your workload. Please open two windows on your computer 1) Log into Schoology 2) www.menti.com 3) log into your School Google account

I am NOT an IT person and get just as lost as anyone else. A bit about myself: Born and Raised in Texas – although I have lived some time out of the country. I have three grown daughters in college that are just awesome! Certified Teacher in Special Education since 1995 – focusing on inclusion support and Co-teach model. Since 2003 I have been working in some form or fashion as an AT Specialist and love, love, love Assistive Technology. I am NOT an IT person and get just as lost as anyone else.

Learning Objectives Participants will: Identify the 6 most common student accommodations Create an assessment in Schoology with built in tools that include the accommodations Understand other readily available tools to meet students’ accommodations needs Providing accommodations (changes in how a student learns and shows what he/she knows) can be challenging. This workshop will explore examples of testing accommodations for students with disabilities and how to easily incorporate those accommodations during your assessment development with readily available tools. Participants will learn to merge two great tools, Schoology and Google Extensions, to create assessments that meet the needs of your students and provide you with time saving measures.

Survey: Most Challenging Accommodations Go to www.menti.com and use the code 52 48 65 Results

6 Most Common Test Accommodations Oral Administration/ Audio Support Reduce choices/fewer items per page/Accommodated test Give responses orally/Dictate to a Scribe/Audio Recorder Use a word processor/access to/keyboarding Extra Time Small Group Setting

What if the student doesn’t have that accommodation? !! Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to teaching that aims to give all students equal opportunities to succeed, no matter how they learn. The Difference Between UDL and Traditional Education: https://www.understood.org/en/learning-attention-issues/treatments- approaches/educational-strategies/the-difference-between-universal-design-for- learning-udl-and-traditional-education The accommodations some kids might get in their IEPs and 504 plans are available to all students. The idea behind this is that all kids may benefit from multiple formats. Some say, too, that providing accommodations for all can reduce stigma students may feel about using accommodations. For instance, if a lesson relies on a book, the book will be available to the entire class in multiple forms. That includes text-to-speech, Braille, digital text and large print.

Why use Schoology? Top 3 Reasons to use Schoology: 1. Students are accountable - they cannot "lose" an assignment if it is on their phone 2. No more "make-up" work - students who are ill or on vacation have access to you 3. You can flip, blend, or supplement your classroom Create, send and receive digital assignments: Collaboration: Students can receive immediate feedback on quizzes. Create small groups in Schoology for brainstorming Teachers can analyze assignment and quiz results quickly 24/7 Create Google Docs together Clubs/Groups can collaborate on their mobile device Engage 100 % of your students Send messages to one person, a small group or an entire class or club. Use online discussions to ensure everyone's voice is heard Communicate directly with a student Send reminders to students with missing/late work Discuss progress with parents Students sick at home or on vacation still have access Share tools with other teachers Generation Z students (born between 1990-2000)have never lived in a world without the internet and cell phones.

Oral Administration/ Auditory Supports Add a practice course Add materials Add Test/Quiz Add a question – save Add test to resources Go to resources – add to course to make the accommodated version. (F) Full; (A) Audio; (R) Reduced Answer Choices

Allow for Dictation/Oral Responses In Schoology: Add Test or Quiz Short Answer/Essay Settings – Allow video or audio answers for students In Google Docs Voice Typing – teach student to use the words for all punctuation, new line and new paragraph Accessibility: Ctrl+Alt+z

What are Google Extensions? Extensions are small software programs that can modify and enhance the functionality of the Chrome browser. Log in your Google Account Notice your Extensions that are already available. Add new Extensions Select the three vertical dots More Tools Extensions Page Down Get more extensions

My Favorite Extensions Mercury Reader – Clear away the clutter from all of your articles. Instantly. Speakit – Tired of reading? Select text you want to read and listen to it. SpeakIt converts text into speech so you no longer need to read. More Info and Extensions: http://tech.gcs.k12.in.us/assistive-technology-part- 2-chrome-extensions-and-apps-for-inclusive-education/
