Third Quarter Science Enrichment Project

Use Google Slides or Prezi. Due one week before the quarter ends. Do not use words you do not know the meaning of without, explaining what they mean. Do not copy and paste sections from your resources. Summative grade For much of this you can use the textbook if you choose. You will likely need several slides for each section. Include labeled pictures of various organs which you can find on line.

Systems: Give the function of each of the following systems of the human body: Integumentary Muscular Skeletal Cardiovascular and circulatory Respiratory Urinary Central Nervous System Digestive system Lymphatic system Endocrine system

II. Building Systems Define the following: electrons, protons, and neutrons; atoms; molecules; cells; tissue; organ; and systems. Place them in order from smallest to largest.

III. Respiratory system: 1. Explain the following parts of this system: Trachea Bronchi Bronchioles Alveoli Diaphragm 2. Include a labeled diagram of the system. 2. Explain cellular respiration

IV. Skeletal system Explain: A. Compact bone Spongy Bone Marrow Hinge joint (and give an example) Ball and socket joint (and give an example Gliding joint (and give an example) Include a labeled diagram of a bone.

V. Muscular system: Explain: A. Ligament B. Tendon C. Smooth muscles D. Cardiac muscles E. Skeletal muscles F. Voluntary muscles G. Involuntary muscles

VI. Cardiovascular system 1. Give the function of each of the following chambers of the heart and major vessels: Right atrium Right Ventricle Left Atrium Left Ventricle Pulmonary artery Pulmonary vein Aorta Vena cava Arteries Veins Capillaries Include a labeled diagram of the heart

VII. Blood Give the function of each of the following: Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets Plasma Systolic pressure Diastolic pressure What is hemophilia? What is leukemia? Include a diagram of the three types of blood cells.

VIII. Digestive system Explain the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion. Give the functions of: a. Liver b. Gall Bladder C. Pancreas 3. Include a diagram of the digestive system.

IX . Central Nervous System Define: A. Neuron B. Axon C. Dendrite D. Cell Body E. Synapse F. Cerebrum G. Cerebellum H. Medulla 2. What is the difference between motor neurons and sensory neurons? 3. What is the difference between the autonomic and somatic nervous systems? 4. Include a diagram of the brain.

X. Urinary System: Define: nephrons renal vein and artery Dialysis 2. What is a diuretic and what is a major diuretic? 3. Based on question 2 why would energy drinks be counter-productive to an athlete’s efforts to stay hydrated?

XI. Endocrine system: Define: a. Gland B. Hormone C. Metabolism D. pituitary Gland E. Thyroid F. Adrenal glands G. Thymus
