Presentation transcript:

bellwork By the time the bell rings, you should… Take out your notebooks! In the journal section, write today’s date. Answer the following questions: What is etiquette? If you were to address an email or a letter to a teacher or administrator, what type of tone would you use?

Writing a business letter

Parts of a business letter Heading Inside Address Salutation Body Closing Signature

Your Task: Choose one of the college/universities that you researched Write a business letter to request admissions information Include the following: Your name, grade and graduating class and the school you attend. Why you are writing (ex. I am in a class called Life Connections and Careers, and we are creating portfolios to help us plan our high school courses to prepare for college and a future career. I chose your university to study.) Tell why you are interested in the school State what type of information you would like to receive (If possible, please send any materials to my teacher, Mrs. Lipinski, and include my name.) Appropriately close the letter Sign the bottom

Tips: Be clear and concise—do not drone on and on CHECK YOUR GRAMMAR! No run-on sentences Appropriate punctuation No slang or abbreviations that you would use in texting Don’t sound like you are talking to a friend Thank the recipient for their time. Sign your letter.

Writing checklist Did you include all parts of your business letter? Heading (school’s address and date) Inside address (recipients name, school name, address) Salutation (with colon at the end) Body (who you are, why you are writing, request, thanks) Closing (appropriate for reader) Signature space and typed name Did you read over your letter and edit? Are there any grammatical mistakes? Are all the words spelled correctly? Does the format fit the letter? (everything single-spaced and left justified) Does the language fit the audience? (no slang, inappropriate abbreviations) Did you sign the letter after printing?

Bellwork: In your notebooks, draw a long rectangle in the shape of an envelope and address it to your house, using Casteel’s address as the return address (24901 S. Power Rd., Queen Creek, AZ 85142)

Parts of an envelope Return address (the address from the heading!) Notice how the Delivery Address is left justified but is located near the center to of the envelope. Delivery Address (the same as the Inside Address!)

Printing your envelope Open Word and create a new document. Make sure your printer is set up to print to Lab C1 Click on Mailings and Envelopes Type in your mailing address to your college and your return address according to the model on the board. Check in with me and then you can print! Your Name (Lipinski) c/o Casteel High School 24901 S. Power Rd. Queen Creek, AZ 85142 The Inside Address should go in this space exactly as you have it in your letter.
