2017 NSERC USRA + LURA Orientation Diana Frasca Research/Awards Officer Lassonde School of Engineering

Why participate in USRA/LURA program? To gain hands-on research experience under supervision of one of Lassonde’s faculty members To stimulate your interest in the natural sciences and engineering and encourage you to pursue graduate school and/or research-related industry careers

How to make this a great experience The Dos and Don’ts Student expectations Supervisor expectations Professional behaviour, confidentiality

Student expectations Complete your assigned duties as per the direction of your supervisor Keep your supervisor informed of your availability to work the agreed-upon hours If you are unable to honour your commitment, speak to your supervisor immediately to arrange a more workable schedule If you withdraw or take time off, inform your supervisor immediately Take part in the Undergraduate Summer Research Conference in August We will be requesting bios and headshots for the Undergraduate Research at Lassonde website (you can view highlights of last year’s conference at lassondeundergraduateresearch.com)

Student expectations Take the appropriate required safety training: If working in a lab (wet or dry labs), you required to take WHMIS II training (Class on May 3rd: 2- 4:30 PM Kinsmen 117) If working in an office/computational-only setting, you are required to take WHMIS I training (Online: https://dohs.apps01.yorku.ca/machform/view.php?id=48801&mf_page=1) Obtain written permission from you supervisor first if you plan to take a course during the tenure of the award

Supervisor expectations Provide a safe and nurturing environment including proper safety training Ensure proper Health and Safety training is provided Communicate expectations to students Meet with students regularly to discuss assigned work and progress Support students during the Undergraduate Summer Research Conference (e.g. covering poster printing costs, attending the event)
