What is Augmented Reality? A technology that superimposes a video on a target image. Aurasma demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBKy-hSedg8

Round 1: 2nd Grade Presidents Project Desire to collaborate Knew about Aurasma Technology tool fit our instructional need Willingness to try something new Students completed 2 research projects as 1st graders Presidents are part of 2nd Grade Social Studies standards Started in February: Presidents Day is in February!

Florida Standards LAFS Writing Standards: Social Studies Standard: LAFS.2.W.1.1-Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. LAFS.2.W.1.2-Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. LAFS.2.W.2.5-With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing. LAFS.2.W.2.6-With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers. LAFS.2.W.3.7-Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations). Social Studies Standard: SS.2.C.3.2-Recognize symbols, individuals, events, and documents that represent the United States. MAFS Standard: MAFS.2.MD.4.10-Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Project Timeline 7 Class Sessions + Culminating Event Introduction to project & FINDS Model Lesson for each step of FINDS Model Filming days Gallery-style event in hallway with voting

Round 2: US Regions (3rd Grade) Desire to try augmented reality again Boring “shoe box” regions project in previous years “Jazz it up!” with Aurasma!

Round 3: Russian Propaganda Project (9th Grade) English I Honors Animal Farm – connected to Russian revolution Collaborative groups Created own targets

Future Projects Our next idea for how to use Aurasma with our third graders is to do a zoo passport with the students researching the different animals. The third grade takes a field trip to the zoo at the end of the school year, so this would work PERFECTLY!!

Grading Projects Took a grade for each section of the FINDS model Grade based on: participation work ethic completion of note sheet or other activity for that section

FINDS Model (FL DOE Research Process Model) FOCUS on information need INVESTIGATE resources to search for answer NOTE and evaluate facts and ideas to answer the question DEVELOP information into knowledge for presentation SCORE presentation and search process Library Media Specialist master: http://www.fldoe.org/core/fileparse.php/7564/urlt/15teachingconcepts.pdf Student handout: http://www.fldoe.org/core/fileparse.php/7564/urlt/23studentskills.pdf Diggity Dog Research Organizer: http://c.ymcdn.com/sites/www.floridamedia.org/resource/resmgr/professional_resources/finds_diggitydogro_col_1.pdf

NOTE And Evaluate Facts and Ideas To Answer the Question

Develop Information Into Knowledge for Presentation Filming overlays and creating targets Pick a trigger image Upload image to Aurasma Studio online Insert video overlay to trigger (you can size the overlay video as you please ) Publish! Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jnQCkOA-do

Culminating Event - Aurasma Gallery & Election

Score Presentation and Search Process

Things to Consider When Making Your Auras Backdrop(s) Length of overlays/file size limitations Editing scripts Permission to photograph & film students

What We Learned Keep scripts short & sweet (file size limitation) Authenticity trumps perfection Time spent-editing student reports before filming Lighting for displaying targets Computer lab scheduling Lack of mobile devices
