Backup on-premises apps and data Internet Virtual Machine Virtual Machine SQL Option 1 Use native Azure Backup Azure Backup Azure Backup Server App/Item level restore On-premises Internet Virtual Machine Virtual Machine SQL Option 2 Use 3rd party backup apps Azure Storage (Blob) or Commvault Simpana VCC for Enterprise App/Item level restore On-premises

Implementation guidance Internet connection to Azure (Azure Backup or Azure Blob storage) via the Azure Backup Server or 3rd party solutions (such as Commvault Simpana or Veeam Cloud Connect) hosted on premises. Examples of business applications running on a virtualized or physical machine on premises. Disk used by your virtual or physical machine. Azure Backup Server orchestrates the replication of machines and manages the configuration of the failback procedures. Azure Backup extends tried-and-trusted tools on-premises with rich and powerful tools in the cloud. It delivers protection for customers’ data no matter where it resides: in the enterprise data center, in remote and branch offices, or in the public cloud; while being sensitive to the unique requirements these scenarios pose.  Virtual machine hosted on premises or on Azure that’s running an application such as SQL or SharePoint. Blob storage stores the backup data and application on Azure. Commvault Simpana VCC for Enterprise or Internet connection to Azure (Azure Backup or Azure Blob storage) via the Azure Backup Server or 3rd party solutions (such as Commvault Simpana or Veeam Cloud Connect) hosted on premises.

Implementation guidance Veeam hosted on premises running on a virtual machine / physical machine.  Azure StorSimple appliance running on premises that can tier data to Azure Blob storage (both hot and cool tier). Disk used by your virtual or physical machine. Veeam Cloud Connect hosted on premises running on a virtual machine / physical machine.  Cool tier on Azure Blob storage. Use cool tier for data that is less frequently accessed. Hot tier on Azure Blob storage. Use hot tier for data that is frequently accessed. Files and folders hold programs and files used by your virtual or physical machines.

Implementation guidance Azure Backup extends tried-and-trusted tools on-premises with rich and powerful tools in the cloud. It delivers protection for customers’ data no matter where it resides: in the enterprise data center, in remote and branch offices, or in the public cloud; while being sensitive to the unique requirements these scenarios pose.  This is an application running on an Azure virtual machine that is backed up using first party and 3rd party solutions. Blob storage stores the backup data and application on Azure. This is a Commvault agent running on the virtual machine that interacts with the Commvault Simpana virtual appliance hosted on Azure. Commvault Simpana virtual appliance hosted on an Azure virtual machine. SQL

Azure storage: offerings Blobs “Highly scalable, REST based cloud object store” Block Blobs: Sequential file I/O Page Blobs: Random-write pattern data Tables “Massive auto-scaling NoSQL store” Dynamic scaling based on load Scale to PBs of table data Fast key/value lookups Queues “Reliable messaging at scale for cloud services” Decouple and scale components Message visibility timeout and update message to protect against unreliable dequeuers Disks “Persistent disks for Azure IaaS VMs” Built on page blobs Premium Storage Disks: SSD based, high IOPS, low latency Files “SMB Access to Azure Storage” Map to file share, standard file system semantics “Lift and shift” legacy apps Code against (REST API) Use on Windows & Linux VMs Azure Import/Export Ship data in hard disk drives AZCopy High-performance data upload, download, & copy ExpressRoute High-bandwidth connection between Azure and on-premises Data Transfer Options

Azure storage: industry leading Locally Redundant Storage (LRS) Zone Redundant Storage (ZRS) Geographically Redundant Storage (GRS) Read-Access Geographically Redundant Storage (RA-GRS) How it works Makes multiple synchronous copies of your data with a single datacenter Stores three copies of data across multiple datacenters within or across regions. For block blobs only. Same as LRS plus a multiple asynchronous copies to a second datacenter hundreds of miles away Same as GRS, plus read access to the secondary access Total copies 3 6 Why use it For economical local storage or data governance compliance An economical, higher durability option for block blob storage For protection against a major datacenter outage or disaster Provides read access to data during an outage, for maximum data availability and durability Availability SLA 99.9% read/write 99.9% write 99.99% read
