Education Efforts that Accompany Rural Water and Sanitation Projects U.S. Arctic Research Commission and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Operation and Maintenance Support Typically ANTHC projects are funded to provide the operation and maintenance training for new and upgraded facilities. Dedicated group complementary to traditional planning, design and construction functions to provide that training function Facilitate a smooth transition to community ownership of facilities Planned project approach With the realization that training is required in the operation and maintenance of facilities funding is dedicated through a group that is dedicated to that effort. Training is typically a planned approach which includes on the job training.

Operation and Maintenance Support Prepare the community for a smooth transition to ownership and operation and maintenance of new and upgraded facilities Certification Operator training Homeowner training Manuals and operation aids Start up assistance and functional testing Follow up assessments and warranty assistance

Typical Homeowner Training Efforts Training provided during construction Homeowner Local operator trade training Onsite homeowner training at transfer Training team/community operator Community meetings Warranty Water and sewer rates and collection Training emphasis on care and protection of new facilities Care of toilet Winter operation – heat trace and circulation pump Winterization Heater maintenance General repair

Typical Homeowner Training Operational Aids Placards Individual homeowner manuals “Hygiene” training efforts have been limited Environmental health officer Liberal water use Hand washing and bathing techniques Laundry

DO NOT FLUSH JUST ANYTHING DOWN THE TOILET

HEAT TRACE OPERATION Arctic Box Heat Trace Long Heat Trace Turn on when needed to keep line from freezing To be determined based on water use and temperature Long Heat Trace Turn on only when thawing service line.

Typical Toilet Your toilet is a standard bottom outlet toilet bowl and tank Flushing valve works by pushing down on the flushing valve lever Water fill valve inside tank controlled by a float mechanism that automatically refills the tank after every flush Tank flush valve can corrode over time and may need cleaning, adjusting, or replacement. Repair right away to stop unnecessary wasted water. Always repair or replace leaking or faulty valves to minimize wasting water. Unneeded used water that drains to your sewer pump will increase your electrical bill. Toilet will break and be permanently damaged if allowed to freeze with water in it Standard Angle Stop Valve to Shut off Water for Repairs or Maintenance – Similar to Valve under Sink Flush Valve Lever Standard Toilet Tank – 1.6 gal Used per Flush - Uses Standard Flush/Water Fill Valve with Float Level Actuator Standard Toilet Bowl - Bottom Outlet with Wax Ring Seal

Watering Point/Honeybucket Haul Training has traditionally emphasized use of equipment. Minimal hygiene training on individual water hauling Minimal training on individual honey bucket use
