1st Trimester of Pregnancy

MAJOR developmental of organs begins during this trimester 1st 3 months or 12 weeks Most couples will not announce their pregnancy until after this trimester- due to miscarriage odds MAJOR developmental of organs begins during this trimester 1st Trimester

First Month The zygote is about the size of a pin head. The heart, which is no larger than a poppy seed, has begun beating. Egg has attached itself to the lining of the uterus. Changes into embryo at the end of 2 weeks

First Month

Changes in the Mom’s body Nausea Fatigue Backaches Mood Swings Enlarging Breasts Frequent Urination Weight Gain (2-5 pounds) Headaches Changes in the Mom’s body

The embryo is about 1/4 inch long and has distinct, slightly webbed fingers. Face, eyes, ears, and limb have developed. Veins are clearly visible. The heart has divided into right and left chambers. Changes into an fetus at the end of eight weeks.

Two Months

Three Months By now the fetus is 1 inch long and is fully formed. He has begun swallowing and kicking. All organs and muscles have formed and are beginning to function. Heart beat can be heard with stethoscope.

Done between 11 and 14 weeks Uses and ultrasound and a blood test Calculates the risk of birth defect Checks thickness of neck 5% chance of false-positive Chronic Villus Sampling (CVS) Done between 10 and 12 weeks Doctor inserts needle through the abdomen or a catheter through the cervix into the placenta to sample the cells They look to find Chromosomal birth defects About 1 in 200 miscarry as a result of the test 1st Trimester Test and Procedures

Miscarriage 20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage Symptoms Causes Vaginal bleeding Dizziness Blurred vision Abdominal pains Headache Baby is moving or kicking less Causes Random events Chromosomal abnormalities Egg doesn’t implant into the uterus Embryo has structural defects Miscarriage

Miscarriage Cont’d What to do if you suspect You should go to the doctor immediately. There may be something that they can do to prevent it. What happens after You will have cramping up to a day or so after as well as some bleeding You will pass the tissue yourself or the doctor will have to remove the tissue from the uterus Miscarriage Cont’d
