How is your learning assessed? Clinical Practice Strong emphasis is placed upon you to learn in the clinical setting. You will be allocated a mentor, who will support you whilst you are having your practice experience, over each year. Your practice will largely follow the normal academic calendar, throughout your course. Academic modules are integrated and will prepare and underpin your practice. Skills, professionalism, attitude, attendance, punctuality are important elements that the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) expect to uphold public confidence. Hub (main placement) Spoke (specialist placements for 1-2 weeks at a time)

Clinical Practice Wards and Specialist Units Elderly care and rehabilitation wards Community settings Critical Care Units Nursing and Residential homes Outpatients and Imaging Social Services (Learning Disability predominately) Charities Prisons and Secure units Community specialists services E.g. Child and adolescents, drug and alcohol services Most people experience health care in their own homes so some of the practice experiences will focus on community as well as the more traditional settings of hospitals that you may expect.

Attending Practice- Vital information! Set number of hours required to qualify (NMC) Typical Shifts Early 7.00 – 15.00 Hrs. Late 13.00 – 21.00Hrs Night 20.30 – 07.45Hrs Many Trust now operate a 12 hour shift system (E.g. 8am-8pm) Shifts will include: WEEKENDS, NIGHTS, and some BANK HOLIDAYS and travel to different placements You must work shifts whilst studying on this course. Placements are normally in block of 7-8 weeks spread throughout the year

Placement Areas Burton Centre-Adult Nursing, based at Burton NHS Trust City Campus-Adult Nursing, based at Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust or Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust. Mental Health Nursing-Black Country partnerships Foundation NHS Trust or Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership Trust). Walsall (Adult- Based at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust or Walsall Manor NHS Trust, Children’s Nursing at all of the acute NHS Trusts within the Black Country region. Learning Disability- placements offered across the Black Country region) Other varied placement areas will available in nursing homes, community settings, prisons Charites etc.

Enhanced DBS and Occupational health If a candidate has been convicted of a criminal offence or received a caution/reprimand or warning within 3 years then it is unlikely that they would be permitted onto the BN programme. Candidates are asked to declare these and then they are considered by the schools suitability panel on a case by case basis. All candidates have an occupational health check to ensure the are fit enough to undertake a nursing programme All offers are conditional until these checks have been undertaken Enhanced DBS is required because you wish to join a professional programme and are working with vulnerable groups. It is worth noting that an enhanced DBS is also undertaken by employers at the point of employment and they may refuse to employ on the basis of offences etc. on a DBS record

Changes to funding for Nursing From August 2017 student nurses will be eligible for a student loan There will no longer be an NHS Bursary from August 2017, likely to mean we can offer more places. Placement travel expenses are likely to be covered Repayments on student loans are at 9% and written off after 30 years (roughly £5 per month for a qualified RN) University of Wolverhampton gives excellent free advice on finances- speak to our student advisors

Personal Statements/Interviews Make your personal statement strong by ensuring you state why you want to study the field of nursing you have applied for. Make sure you proof read it. Volunteering opportunities greatly strengthen any applications considered. www.wlv.ac.uk/personalstatement You will be interviewed by academics, practice partners and service users/carers You should be on time and present yourself professionally. You will be asked questions about the course, some values based questions and think about why you would like to study with us. Prepare by checking out the NMC pages for students at www.nmc-uk.org You will need to access UCAS for your results about 14 days after interview. Successful candidates are invited to a ‘Road to success day’ Tips- make sure you are well presented but comfortable- helps confidence Have a dummy run of where you need to be to work out timings, including parking Read around current issues in Nursing and the NHS in the media. The road to success day is really important , as you get to know your group, get measured for your uniform and get all the pre-course information.
