OUTLINE Background Contents How to use the data Limitations Resources

Background

BACKGROUND (1) What is the Community Health Survey? Cross-sectional telephone survey on the health of New Yorkers Conducted by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Complex sample survey weights are available to produce neighborhood and city-wide estimates Population and geography Non-institutionalized adults aged 18 and older who live in a household with a landline telephone or a cell phone in New York City (the five borough area) Annual sample of approximately 8,500 randomly selected adults Data on HIV+ persons is not available

BACKGROUND (2) Timeframe of available data Accessibility of data Data collected since 2002 Starting in 2009, expanded the eligible population from households with a landline to also include cell-only households Accessibility of data Public use dataset are available with single year weights Users can request multi-year weights from the DOHMH: epidatarequest@health.nyc.gov

Content

CONTENT (1) What’s in the CHS data set 125 questions covering the following health topics: general health status and mental health, health care access, cardiovascular health, diabetes, asthma, immunizations, nutrition and physical activity, smoking, HIV, sexual behavior, alcohol consumption, cancer screening and other health topics. A core group of demographics variables are included every year to facilitate weighting and comparisons among different groups of New Yorkers.

CONTENT (2) HIV-related indicators HIV testing Tested in the past 12 months Ever tested

How to use the CHS data

HOW TO USE THE DATA (1) Proportion of NYC residents tested in the last 12 months - 2013

HOW TO USE THE DATA (2) Expanded HIV testing is associated with decreases in late HIV diagnosis Ransome, Yusuf, et al. "Expanded HIV testing coverage is associated with decreases in late HIV diagnoses." AIDS 29.11 (2015): 1369-1378.

HOW TO USE THE DATA (3) Potential use of CHS to further DSRIP PPS work Examine trends in city-wide HIV testing or neighborhood-wide HIV testing Examine trends in HIV testing by demographic subgroups Compare CHS data to clinic interventions

Strengths and Limitations

STRENGTHS Population-representative sample 10+ years of data available DOHMH provides example code for data analysis If you need assistance with the data, you can reach out to the health department epidatarequest@health.nyc.gov

LIMITATIONS What to keep in mind: The survey sampling methodology does not capture the following groups: households without any telephone service and (prior to 2009) households that only have a cell phone. The CHS also excludes adults living in institutional group housing, such as college dormitories. Due to the complex sampling design of the CHS, data must be analyzed in a software program capable of handling complex survey data  (such as SUDAAN, STATA or SAS-callable SUDAAN) Multi-year weights are only available for data years 2002-2008, and 2009-2012. At this time, survey data from 2009-2012 cannot be combined with earlier years.
