Review Cardiovascular Fitness The ability of the heart, blood vessels and respiratory system to supply oxygen and nutrients to the muscles during exercise.

The heart The heart is a muscle that pumps blood through the body Oxygen is the body’s fuel. Muscles cannot work without oxygen. Oxygen is carried through the blood. Blood vessels are tubes that carry blood throughout the body Arteries are blood vessels that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body Veins are blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart from the body Capillaries are where oxygenated and deoxygenated blood is exchanged

Finding your HR Pulse: caused by the pressure of the blood on the artery wall Measured in beats per minute BPM Carotid artery: on your neck Radial artery: on your wrist Ways you can take your pulse: Count beats for 6 seconds, then multiply by 10 Count beats for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4 Count beats for 30 seconds, then multiply by 2

Heart Rate Resting Heart Rate: taken while sitting or lying down Most accurate time to take it is when you first wake up, before sitting up in bed The more active you are, the lower your resting heart rate is Maximum Heart Rate: the fastest your heart should beat during exercise Formula: Max HR = 220-your age Example: 220-20=200bpm

Heart Rate Target Heart Rate Zone: the range that your heart rate should be within when you are exercising Formula: Low end of Target HR = Max HR x .50 High end of Target HR = Max HR x .85 Example: 200 x .50 = 100 bpm 200 x .85 = 170 bpm The Target HR Zone for a 20-year-old is 100-170bpm

Blood Pressure Blood Pressure: the force of blood against artery walls Measured by two numbers… Systolic: the pressure at the moment blood is being pumped out of the heart by the ventricles Top number Diastolic: the pressure at the moment the heart is relaxed and being filled with blood Bottom number Normal blood pressure is 120/80

High Blood PRessure High BP is called hypertension Can be caused by thyroid, kidney, or adrenal gland problems Certain prescription medications, alcohol, and illegal drugs Too much salt in the diet If neglected, hypertension may lead to heart attacks and strokes

Low Blood Pressure Low blood pressure is called hypotension It is common for athletes and highly active people to have low BP because their heart rates can be low Low BP can also be signs of other medical conditions and cause dizziness and/or fainting because the brain is not receiving enough oxygen Pregnancy, lack of nutrients, anemia, dehydration, and certain medications can also cause low BP
