2008-2009 Back-to -Libraries Conference Tucson High Magnet School August 4, 2008 “Technology in Libraries: What's new in 2008-2009 and how to use it." Presenters Cheryl Beran, Catalina High School Sally Dooley, Sabino High School Joan Valenzuela, Miller Elementary

Model for Interaction Curriculum Instruction Management Voice There are four different aspects of our position that generate constructive discussions. Today, we are addressing Curriculum and Instruction and how technology can be embedded in these areas for meaningful student achievements. Curriculum Instruction Management Voice

All We Plan to Cover Today Summer Renewal …………………….Cheryl AASL Standards for 21st Century …..Joan Assessment/What’s a WIKI? .……… Sally VoiceThread /Digital Storytelling ... Cheryl KVOA Book Reviews……………….. Cheryl

Summer Renewal Group “Cheryl Shares” the spontaneous summer sessions of several available librarians concerned about the State of TUSD Libraries. The group collectively agreed to the need for 3 committees or goals: Student Achievement and Assessment PR/ Image Improvement Grant Writing The Vision all librarians need to focus on in this school year must relate to the new AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner.

Vision of TUSD Learners & Libraries STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS Standards for 21st Century Learners GRANT WRITING PUBLIC RELATIONS “Moving TUSD Libraries into the 21st Century”

Access the Complete New Standards! Just In Time --- Our National Association revises the Information Literacy Standards we have been following and foresees our future to address the needs of the 21st Century Learner! Access the Complete New Standards! http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslproftools/learningstandards/AASL_Learning_Standards_2007.pdf

New Standards Built on Nine Common Beliefs “Standards for the 21st-Century Learner offer vision for teaching and learning to both guide and beckon our profession as education leaders. They will both shape the library program and serve as a tool for library media specialists to use to shape the learning of students in the school.” http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslproftools/learningstandards/ALA_print_layout_1_248674_248674.cfm

Building on Nine Common Beliefs, cont. Who will provide the cement to seal these building blocks for our TUSD 21st Century Learners?

Bridging Nine Standards to Four Crossing the Bridge to Four Standards for 21st Century Learners can be smooth using our Board-approved Integrated Curriculums K – 12. Information Literacy Standards (abridged) Access Information Evaluate Information Use Information Pursue Information related to personal interests Appreciates Literature Excellence in seeking and generating knowledge Contributes to society Ethical Behavior Participates in Groups

Include Standards for 21st Century Learners in your Professional Growth Plan and your Site’s 301 Goals Created By Sally Dooley

“A toy for generating “word clouds” from text.” Sally, What’s a Wordle? http://wordle.net/ “A toy for generating “word clouds” from text.”   Wordles- a great technique for showing the emphasis in an article or speech. You copy and paste text or link to a blog’s URL. The most frequently used words show up the largest. A great way to analyze campaign speeches.

What’s a WIKI? Web pages in minutes with minimal skills needed. 1994 – Ward Cunningham –Wiki term from buses at Honolulu Airport – fast, quick Web pages in minutes with minimal skills needed. You can make a wiki using the Basic Directions link. I recommend Wikispaces. It seems to have better graphic capabilities, and comments don’t show unless you click on them. All educational wikis should be private or by invitation only, never public. All of the wikis I listed have educational wikis as a separate option. The three I listed are free. Sally @ Sabino http://www.wikispaces.com Visit the Back to Library Conference - 21st Century TUSD Wiki http://21stcenturytusd.wikispaces.com/ [NOTE: The Wiki Wordle was from the Wikipedia article on wikis.]

Evidence-based Practice The TUSD Assessment Wiki A place to gather information and organize data for evidence based practice. The plan this year is to create an online pre and post-test based on the Trails model for 2nd, 4th, 7th, and 9th grades. We have already discussed this with Accountability and Research. If we can get them the test questions they can help us create the test. The link to Trails, a free assessment, is on the wiki. We need a PD day in August to solicit questions, and get the committee working on the tests. TUSD Assessment Wiki - http://tusdassessment.wikispaces.com/  If you want to join either wiki, use the password tusdlib or Email sally.dooley@tusd1.org for an invitation. The Other Cool Tools page is a place that we can start collecting tools/products that we can share with teachers and students.

21st Century Connections http://21centuryconnections.com/node/550 A Quote to Keep in Mind A Framework for Learning “Not only is the content landscape changing, but the skill set is changing too. There are numerous interpretations of 21st century skill sets but all tend to boil down to 4 categories of skills and understandings that students need to develop: Inquiry, Research, and Information Literacy Digital Citizenship and Personal Learning Networks Communication and Collaboration in a Global World Creativity, Inventive and Critical Thinking, and Design”

Summer 2008 Fitting Remarks by our New District Leader ….. “the educational landscape is changing. A flat world and a global economy that puts a premium on creativity and innovation, along with digital native students, require us to consider new ends or outcomes, a progressive curriculum, and 21st century teaching strategies to produce those ends if we are to be a District of first choice. After only a few weeks of officially being on the job, I am convinced that together we can design and transform the District into a model for 21st century education.” --Elizabeth Celania-Fagen, Ed.D. Superintendent
