Reading/Language/Spelling 3rd Grade ELA News Weeks of March 21st – March 31st Spelling Words: *Test on Friday, March 24th. Words with suffix – tion/-sion and academic vocabulary 1. Nation 16. national *Test on Friday, March 31st. Words with suffix – ful/-fully and academic vocabulary 1. beautiful 2. cheerful 3. harmful 4. playful 5. useful 6. colorful 7. thankfully 8. joyfully 9. helpfully 10. painfully 11. carefully 12. feature 13. bountiful 14. temperature 15. difference 16. thermometer Grammar: Compound Predicates, Alliteration, Adjectives, and Adverbs, Complex Sentences. Writing: Over the next 4 to 6 weeks we will working on writing in response to passages. Reading/Language/Spelling Main Selections: Various poems, paragraphs, and passages. Comprehension: Students will compare and contrast ideas in poems, passages, and paragraphs and make connections to their own personal experiences and points of view. They will also identify main idea, author’s purpose, mood, and theme of a poem. We are working hard to prepare for the practice test on March 24th, and the end of the year reading gate on April 19th. *Comprehension checks will be made periodically during the week. Fluency: We will focus on Expression, Rate, Punctuation, & Accuracy this week. *I will take a G1 fluency grade every Friday. Target Vocabulary: *Test on Friday, March 10th. March 21– March 31st Vocabulary Microphone – an instrument for converting sound waves into electrical energy variations, which may then be amplified, transmitted, or recorded Geometry – the branch of mathematics concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, surfaces, solids, and higher dimensional analogs. Autograph - a signature, especially that of a celebrity written as a memento for an admirer Democracy – a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives Antonym – a word opposite in meaning to another Goddess – a woman who is adored, especially for her beauty Biology – the study of living organisms, divided into many specialized fields that cover their physiology, behavior, and other qualities Telescope – an optical instrument used to make distant objects appear nearer Reminders *Check and sign your child’s homework folder each night. *Practice fluency each night for 1 minute, three times. *Poem will be recited before the class on or before March 31st. Please practice with your child. Extra time will not be given. If you have misplaced the poem, you can find a copy on our website under “poems.”
