The Temptation of Jesus To learn the story of Jesus’ temptation To consider what we can learn from this account To consider ways that we are tempted

What happened to Jesus after his baptism? He was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit.

The story...

The wilderness was a desert – bare, rocky and dry The wilderness was a desert – bare, rocky and dry. Nobody lived there but wild animals. Jesus was alone there for 40 days and 40 nights, with no food

The tempter came and said to him, 'If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.'

Jesus answered him, 'It is written, "Man does not live by bread alone

Then the devil brought him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, 'If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here. For it is written, "He will command his angels to protect you. They will bear you up so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."

Jesus answered him, 'It is said, "You are not to put the Lord your God to the test."'

Again, the Devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

And the Devil said to him, 'This whole realm has been granted to me, and I can give it to whomever I wish. If you worship me, it shall all be yours.'

Jesus said to him, 'Go away, Satan Jesus said to him, 'Go away, Satan! For it is written: "You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him."'

Having completed every temptation, the Devil left him.

Temptation comic strip

Group Work What is temptation? How did Satan try to tempt Jesus? Why was Jesus tempted to do these three things? How did he remain strong and resist temptation? Have you ever been tempted to do something you knew was wrong? What does this teach us about Jesus?

For Discussion How could we avoid temptation in the following scenarios?

Temptation 1 Your father is a policeman. He is very important. The children at school tease you and say you are making it up. One day, your friend asks you to steal his badge to prove who he is. Q. What is the temptation? Q. How could you avoid it?

Temptation 2 A child in your class is being picked on. Other children are calling him or her names. Your friend tells you that you should join in or the children will start to pick on you too. Q. What is the temptation? Q. How could you avoid it?

Today’s task Either ( Write a rap from the point of view of Jesus or the Devil about the story of Jesus’ temptation OR Write a rap about a situation where you’ve been tempted, what you did and how you felt. Make your own comic strip about Jesus’ temptation by the devil Why was it so important for Jesus to resist the temptation? What does this story teach us about Jesus?

Drama Activity Think of a situation when someone might be tempted. Act it out twice, once when they give in to the temptation (and the consequences) and once when they resist temptation (and the consequences).

Jesus was a cool dude forty days without food, devil tried to tempt him but that's okay, He's got love on his face, no disgrace, He's spreading his love all over the face, saying, "We will, We will do right" saying, "We will, We will do right“ Satan got a little frustrated, couldn't believe he couldn't take him down, With his lies of promises and prosperity, Jesus said, " Satan get behind me, devil you're beneath me!" Because of Jesus we can stand proud and say, "we will, we will do right!" (like Jesus in the Bible days) "we will, we will do right!“ Satan took him to a mountain high, said Jesus you can fly, You are the king, surely the angels would not let you die, Jesus said, "Tempt me no mo', Satan you've got to go!" We're following Jesus Christ our Saviour, and now we flow, "we will, we will do right (like Jesus in the Bible days) "we will, we will do right, do right!"
