March 26, 2012 As you come in… Seatwork: Today’s Agenda… Partner Writing Trade seatwork poem with a partner. Read partner’s poem. Write one sentence on the bottom explaining which device you see in the poem. Take notes over Types of Poems Identify examples of different poems HW Tonight: You will be given a type of poem to find. Print poem. Write label on back. (5th period turn in on Edmodo) As you come in… Seatwork: Find the poetic/sound device underneath your desk. Write a 5 line poem that uses that device somewhere in the poem.

Epic Poem Definition: *long, serious poem that tells the story of a larger-than-life heroic Figure. *Originally, way for customs and stories to be passed through oral story-telling. Characteristics: Heroic central figure Intervention of supernatural figures Concern with fate of nation or people Vast setting Example

Sonnet Definition: A short poem written in a certain format Example Characteristics: 1.) 14 lines 2.)broken into 3 quatrains and 1 couplet. 3.) has a certain rhyme scheme 4.) written in iambic pentameter

Lyric Poem a poem, such as a sonnet or an ode, that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet. The term lyric is now commonly referred to as the words to a song. Lyric poetry does not tell a story which portrays characters and actions. The lyric poet addresses the reader directly, portraying his or her own feeling, state of mind, and perceptions. Example

Ballad poem that tells a story similar to a folk tale or legend and often has a repeated refrain. A ballad is often about love and often sung. A ballad is a story in poetic form. Example

March 28, 2012 Today’s Agenda… As you come in… Pick up BP materials Complete practice quiz over poetry terms Today’s Agenda… 1.) Review Practice Quiz 2.) Divide into teams 3.) Go outside for carousel poster activity. 4.) Share posters in class

Carousel Activity Each poster has a different poetry term written at the top. Your group must begin a poem using that term, such as alliteration. Then when it is time to switch, you go to the next poster and add to what has already been written.
