Project Quality Management Chapter8

What Is Project Quality? The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines quality as “the degree to which a set of inherent characteristics fulfills requirements” (ISO9000:2000) Other experts define quality based on: Conformance to requirements: the project’s processes and products meet written specifications Fitness for use: a product can be used as it was intended

What Is Project Quality Management? ‘’Creating and following policies and procedures to ensure that a project meets the defined needs it was intended to meet from the customer’s perspective.’’ PMP Exam Prep, 6th Edition Project quality management ensures that the project will satisfy the needs for which it was undertaken.

How Do We Manage Quality? Processes include: Quality planning: identifying which quality standards are relevant to the project and how to satisfy them Perform Quality assurance: periodically evaluating overall project performance to ensure the project will satisfy the relevant quality standards Perform Quality control: monitoring specific project results to ensure that they comply with the relevant quality standards. Perform Quality Assurance Perform Quality Control Plan Quality

Quality Planning Definition: The process of identifying quality requirements and/or standards for the project and its deliverables and documenting how the project will demonstrate compliance with quality requirements. OUTPUTS 1-Quality Management plan 2- operational; definitions 3- checklists 4-inputs to other processes INPUTS 1-Quality policy 2- Scope statement 3- Product description 4- Standards and regulations 5- Other process outputs TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES 1- Benefit/ cost analysis 2- Benchmarking 3- flowcharting 4- Design of experiments

Quality Planning OUTPUTS: The quality management plan: should describe how a project management team will implement its quality policy. Operational Definitions: An operational definition describes what something is and how it is measured by the quality control process. Checklists: A checklist is a structured tool used to verify that a set of required steps or requirements have been performed. Inputs To Other Processes : The quality planning process may identify need for further activity in another area.

Quality Planning Cost of quality includes all costs incurred over the life of the product by investment in preventing nonconformance to requirements appraising the product or service for conformance to requirements, and failing to meet requirements (rework). Conformance means delivering products that meet requirements and fitness for use Cost of nonconformance means taking responsibility for failures or not meeting quality expectations. Failure costs: are often categorized into internal (found by the project) and external (found by the customer). are also called cost of poor quality.

Quality Planning

Perform Quality assurance Definition: The process of auditing the quality requirements and the results from quality control measurements to ensure that appropriate quality standards and operational definitions are used. Quality assurance can be INTERNAL ( from the project management team to the performing organization) Quality assurance can be EXTERNAL (provided to the customer and other parties actively involved in the work of the project

Perform Quality assurance INPUTS 1-Quality management plan 2- Results of quality control measurements 3- Operational definitions TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES 1- Quality planning tools and techniques 2- Quality audits OUTPUTS 1-Quality improvement

Perform Control Quality DEFINITION: The process of monitoring and recording results of executing the quality activities to assess performance and recommend necessary changes. Project results mentioned include both PRODUCT results such as deliverables and MANAGEMENT results such as cost and schedule performance Quality control is often performed by a quality control department. The project management team should have a working knowledge of statistical quality control especially sampling and probability to help evaluate and control outputs

Perform Control Quality INPUTS 1-Work results 2- Quality management plan 3- Operational definitions 4- Checklists TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES 1- Inspection 2- Control charts 3- Pareto diagram 4- Statistical sampling 5- Flowcharting 6-Trend analysis OUTPUTS 1-Quality improvement 2- Acceptance decisions 3- Rework 4-Process adjustments

Conclusion In conclusion we find that in order to achieve Project Quality Management , one has to integrate the concepts of Project management with the processes of quality management at the project scale and throughout its different phases. For effective PQM, it is essential that the project management team be aware of the concepts of quality management to be able to make use of the described processes and implement them to achieve the required end product.
