SUPPORTED INTERNSHIPS Askham Bryan college - april 2016

Welcome and housekeeping If you are not sure about anything during the day, ask: Stephen Harrison, North Yorkshire County Council Gary Robinson, City of York Michael Cotton, National Development Team for Inclusion

purpose of the day Employment should be: everyone’s business included in all discussions about the future part of every young person’s aspirations and every parent’s ambitions for their child Being employed can improve independence, friends and relationships and health . . .

Why supported internships? One of the best ways to get young people with complex needs into paid employment, with the right support It is of benefit to employers; not just ‘doing the right thing’ We believe it is the right approach for a difficult problem The government has given some funding to Local Authorities to try to make this happen

. . . So today . . . National perspective A working example from a special school North Yorkshire’s proposed model Workshops: How can parents and carers make a difference? How can the voluntary and community sectors support young people into employment? Q&A and next steps.

An example in practice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIlxYgj1Tho
