Statistics Physical & Sexual Abuse Substance Abuse & Mental Health Girls from physically or sexually abusive homes are more at risk of separation from their families of origin before adulthood due to out-of-home placements or running away. Increased risk of involvement in drug- or prostitution-related activities Bureau of Justice Statistics study: 38,798 women participants (in their study) 43% reported some type of assault prior to that incarceration 33.5% reported lifetime physical abuse 33.9% reported lifetime sexual abuse (Browne, Miller, and Maguin, 1999) Prevalence of substance use and post-traumatic stress disorder 78 to 85% of incarcerated women have experienced at least one traumatic event 69% of the general female population (Liddell and Martinovic, 2013)
