Presentation transcript:

Digital media Media has changed and developed within their traditions. Nowadays everything is done digitally such as editing films and/or television programmes rather doing it manually on a film reel. Before the film reels, there were cameras as big as a coffee machine that had a cassette tape attached to the side to store footage. These cameras would contain a film reel that would capture the footage and would later be cut one by one using a moviola that would help use to edit the footage together. Filming films can also be done digitally as it is very easy to save and delete scenes that is needed. However, most directors would rather use a 35 millimetre camera as the camera itself has a better effect on the footage such as soft focus. Films such Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice are still being filmed on a 35 millimetre camera. Films have also tried to use both digital and film reel cameras such as Boyhood. There are many advantages as well as disadvantages when using digital video. One advantage is that it is easy to us such as saving the footage on a hard drive by transferring it from the camera straight onto the computer by a USB cable. With digital footage it is easy to make many copies on a computer as a film reel will take too much time and is also cheaper as there is no need to buy any film reels to capture footage. One negative on digital video is that it can easily be accessed meaning anyone can leak the video to the public. Sometimes especially when downloading videos online, the video may cause a virus on your computer causing it to freeze or slow down.

High Definition High-definition is part of TV system which provides an image with a higher resolution than that of standard-definition. HD which stands for high definition is a major improvement in television technology, the television industry has constantly kept in improving from black-and-white analogue, to widescreen colour from The Queen's Messenger, a one-act play broadcast on September 11, 1928, which was the world's first live drama on television. HD gives a much clearer image as it includes more pixels than a standard television, which enables more vivid colours to be portrayed across the screen. A SDTV provides a lower resolution which is normally about 720 pixels compared to a HDTV which has a higher resolution than analogue TV which ranges 1080p and above. This enables more programmes and movies to be made in HD, as the now thing is to have a HD flat screen TV. High definition’s impact on viewers is massive as it enhances their viewing experience. More consumers are being amazed by the quality of high definition seen in cinemas and are wanting to buy HD ready televisions as they want to have this experience constantly in the viewing of their own homes. High definition televisions are extremely popular now and are the now thing to have, this has led to the equipment quality improving in the film industry, with everything being filmed at the highest possible definition, in order to make the best quality programming for their audience, this enables viewers experiences to constantly improve with companies constantly improving their experiences they put on offer. Therefore, TV and film producers are now spending more on equipment and software. Before these times, there used to only be standard definition, which included 720x576 pixels resolution. Whereas today, it ranges from 720p HD, 1080p Full HD, Quad HD and 4K Ultra HD. HD refers to the detail of a screen or the number of pixels that are put into a display. A pixel is the smallest visible element on screen, these are known as dots which make up the picture. A 720p screen is 1280 pixels x 720 pixels. This is the minimum for HD. A HD TV with a resolution of 720p would only be able to display videos at this resolution and no higher, 1080p pixel dimensions are 1920x1080, known as full HD or true HD. 4K Ultra HD screens and Quad HD have more pixels, which makes the image even more clearer as it is a lot sharper.

3D 3D stands for three dimensions. Most television and film we watch is in 2 dimensions, however with the help of 3D televisions, we can now watch Tv and film in 3D. The fun in watching film or Tv in 3D is that you feel as if you are in the film or Tv series yourself when actually you are sat in your very own living own. Technology has developed greatly over the years and 3d is one of them where producers are free to expand their imagination and distract the audience from the real world. As 3D was in fashion at the time, many places tried to use the 3D technology to attract more customers and expand their audience. Such examples are pubs. Pubs would mostly show 3D sports as that was what people were into especially 3D football. There have also been many 3D documentaries you can watch such as on discovery channel. One thing 3D has done to the viewers is disturb their eyesight. It has caused the viewers to get dizziness and even headaches. Most people do not like the fact to wear 3D glasses as well as they may irritate them plus 3D TV’s are expensive. Due to this some companies have had bad sales. On the bright side, Instead of heading to the cinema to watch a 3D film, you can comfortably watch it at home on your TV. 3D TVs provide remarkable picture quality. However, it should be noted that the picture is most impressive when displaying high-definition, 1080p images in 3D. You’ll notice even better quality in the most high-end varieties, with their less expensive counterparts.

The internet The internet is the most important element is people’s daily life. Everyone uses the internet for everything whether it be for pleasure such as watching memes on social media or googling what today’s weather is. However, film and television use the internet in order to promote their new film or series. They do this by using advertisements such as trailers and releasing them on social media accounts. This is in order to attract their target audience as almost everyone uses social media such as YouTube and Instagram. For example, websites such as IMDB alerts the public to what new films are releasing with critics or other people leaving their opinions and reviews allowing the target audience to see if they are willing to watch it or not. One negativity about the internet is that people may spoil the film for others by releasing comments on scenes of the film on social media or upload those spoiler scenes. For example, people may watch spoilers of an important scene on YouTube or/and Instagram. Apart from this people tend to also upload films and television series illegally online on pirated sites. This is called pirating and these films and television series are uploaded onto websites such as ‘123movies’. For example, new films such as ‘Baywatch’ is uploaded online within weeks or even days of the release in cinemas. This is illegal as the money paid at cinema to watch a film goes straight to the production however, when watching it for free online, the production don’t make enough money as expected. Broadcasts such as Sky have applications which allow their viewers to catch up or watch television series or films using the internet. These applications such as BBC iPlayer can be used on other devices such your tablets or mobile devices using the internet. These applications or websites allow their audiences to sign up for subscriptions to stream their favourite films or television shows by paying a small fee monthly using the internet. Another disadvantage is that the internet is not free as people pay for their broadband. Also sometimes there may be a problem with internet service as signals can get poor and may not be as strong.

On-Demand On demand has become popular attribute within society as many people do not have the time to constantly watch programmes or movies when they come on, so on demand has become a useful tool enabling people to catch up with they have missed. On demand viewing allows for a viewer to select from a range of stored content wherever and whenever they choose to do so this enables individuals to watch what they want instead of sticking to a TV scheduling, instead there is a freedom to watch whatever you would like. There are many different types of, an example On demand can be viewed via streaming or downloading a show or film, and there are several different platforms to view on demand on. Legal services include for On demand BBC iPlayer, Netflix and Now TV, and some require a subscription. Whereas others are illegal and can be accessed online, with individuals sharing files, websites include Show box and Put locker. Piracy is one of the biggest issues for the movie industry, the is due to films becoming available on illegal online streaming services, leading to a major drop in revenue, as profits from films being watched in the cinema, films being bought online or on DVD or Blu Ray are decreasing rapidly because of films being leaked online. Benefits range for on demand viewing, as viewers can access programmes or movies that they may have missed recently, they really wanted to watch or others that were shown years prior. It also benefits producers of the programmes and movies, as they gain a profit on demand services through new advertisement platforms which can also generate different sponsorship deals for them. However, disadvantages are that it depends on the TV package to access on demand content, unless it is viewed illegally. For instance, customers that are willing to pay more than others monthly may be given access to watch on demand content on several different platforms. Whereas, a customer with the most basic package may only be allowed access to one platform, and only at a certain time.
