Welcome to Second Grade! Mrs. Postma and Mr. Orcutt 2016 -2017

About Mrs. Postma Married with 2 Children My husband’s name is Jared Dylan -18 years-old/ graduated from Klein Collins Brandon -11 years-old/ 6th grader at Schindelwolf This my 20th year teaching Have lived in New York, Texas and Alabama Went to Kleb (8th grade) and Klein High School Graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University Certification-Interdisciplinary Studies 1-8th Grade English as a Second Language (ESL) Gifted & Talented (GT)

About Mr. Orcutt Married My wife’s name is Kelli (Works at Morehead Jr. High in CISD) This my 10th year teaching 2nd Grade Graduate of Purdue University. Prior to teaching I worked at Purdue admitted graduate and international students to the university. Certification- EC-8th Grade English as a Second Language (ESL) Gifted & Talented (GT)

Lemm Procedures Turn off cell phones once you enter Lemm Driver’s License will be scanned every time you are on campus. Remove hats Practice opening ziploc bags, milk, granola packages at home. (This helps them at lunch) Practice tying shoelaces Know name, address, parent’s names, birthday and phone number.

From the Nurse Must be fever free for 24 hours to be able to return to school. All medication forms need to be filled out in the clinic Expect Success!

Accounts are accessible online at Lunch Information Accounts are accessible online at www. paypams.com When lunch envelopes come home please send money with your child to replenish their account. Parents can eat at table by the stage with your child. Please sign in at the front office.

Recess Information Unfortunately due to security and safety of all students parents are not allowed at recess.

Attendance/Tardies Attendance is very important! Learning is hands on For every 4th tardy conduct grade will be drop a letter grade. Class begins at 7:50 Agenda, morning work, and small groups are being completed at this time Tardy bell rings at 8:15 Student is still expected to complete work

Parent/Family Access Your child’s grades will be available to you online so you can monitor their weekly progress. Parents can set up grade triggers to notify them if grade drops below parent set expectations. Grades will be updated weekly. www.kleinisd.net

Homework Lemm has moved away from traditional homework. Required Homework: Read 20 minutes nightly Basic Math Facts Studying and completing Study Guides Optional Homework: Math Practice sheets ELA/SS practice sheets

Math Homework Practice addition and subtraction math facts up to 20 (TEK 2.4A) Reflex math Facts only go up to 10 Although homework is optional, we strongly encourage that you work with your child/children at home.

Math There will not be a math study guide Go over practice sheets sent home and assignments that go home weekly.

Science Study Guides Science Study Guides will be glued in the science journal 1 week prior to the test. Study Guide is also available online - students need to do the work on the study guide that is glued in their journal. Students need to fill in any vocabulary or questions Work on the study guide throughout the week so that it is not overwhelming to your child. Students need to start working on good study habits with you. Parents sign the study guide the night BEFORE the test.

Google Forms Some assignments/assessments will be administered using google forms. Grades are not recorded on paper. Please check Parent/Family Access regularly to see student grades. Math google form grades will be recorded on paper only when computations are required.

Place Value to thousands Recalling Basic Facts to add/subtract with automaticity Multiple Step Word Problems Adding/Subtracting to the thousands with regrouping Multiplication/Division Telling Time to the minute Counting a collection of coins Shapes and their attributes Graphing Fractions Financial Literacy *these are some NOT ALL

What Does an End of the Year Second Grader Know in Reading & Writing? Reads on a level M book with a fluency rate of 94-124 wcpm with comprehension Writes complete sentences using correct punctuation. Can brainstorm and write a meaningful story/expository paper that both include details and correct grammar.

What can you do to help? Complete required homework and work on optional ones Help with corrections on their daily work and assessments for all subjects when papers go home in Wednesday folder Practice math facts nightly. Read with your child daily and/or have them read to you. ask them questions about their reading Have your child develop questions about their reading Go over sight words. Practice writing sentences. Capital letters and punctuations Practice writing personal narratives and expository writing.

Behavior Plan Conduct Poster Stickers – Positive behavior earns your child money that they can use to buy items from the classroom store. Students are responsible for their sticker chart. They need to keep it in their pencil bag. If they lose their stickers, it will not be replaced Not following classroom/school procedures and homework requirements will result in their work habit grade being adjusted accordingly. *Wednesday folders will document behavior. Please discuss these behaviors with your child so that they can work on correcting their behavior.

Book Orders Scholastic books is the cheapest way to order books. Please send a CHECK ONLY with your child made out to Scholastic with school orders. You can now order online!

Family Participation Studies show that students are much more successful when their families are involved with their teacher to create a team atmosphere! Volunteers must complete a background check!
