Education & Coursework “A doctoral degree to practice psychology requires at least 4-6 years of full-time study after completing an undergraduate degree” Psychologists must take courses that cover topics such as psychological assessment and therapy, ethics, and statistics Many psychologists take part in research and teaching while in college “A one-year full-time supervised internship is required prior to graduation” If a psychologist is permitted to prescribe medication, they must undergo advanced training to do so (American Psychological Association)

What Psychologists Do Many psychologists talk to patients who have been feeling depressed, angry, or anxious “Psychologists can help people learn to cope with stressful situations, overcome addictions, and manage their chronic illnesses” Psychologists often give and analyze tests that can possibly diagnose a patient’s condition Psychologists use therapy such as cognitive, behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, humanistic, psychodynamic or a combination of these to treat their patients “Some psychologists are trained to use hypnosis, which research has found to be effective for a wide range of conditions including pain, anxiety and mood disorders” (APA)

Work Locations & Patients To work at any location, a psychologist must have a license in that specific state Many psychologists own their own private practice or work with a group of other psychologists Some psychologists partner with a hospital or medical group and have patients referred to their specific office Psychologists can be found in most schools and universities, working individually with students Psychologists can also work with patients in prisons, veterans’ medical centers, and nursing homes (APA)
