BELLWORK – EA2 Review: 1/10 What are you expected to do for Paper 2? List the three major topics and focus of study for this unit (pg. 2) List five things your essay needs to demonstrate in order to reach the 13-15 mark band. What are the common problems in exam answers? Why do you think these problems are so common? THINKER: Summarize the elements necessary to write a good essay.

Causes and Effects of 20th Century Wars Topic Prescribed Content Causes of War Economic, ideological, political, territorial and other causes Short vs Long Term Causes Practices of War and their impact on the Outcome Types of war: civil wars; wars between states; guerrilla wars Technological developments; theatres of war – air, land, sea The extent of the mobilization of human and economic resources The influence and/or involvement of foreign powers Effects of War The successes and failures of peacemaking Territorial Changes Political repercussions Economic, social, and demographic impact Topics for Detailed Study Africa: Algerian War (Gulf War) Americas: Falklands/Malvinas War Asia: Vietnam War (Chinese Civil War) “Cross-Regional” Wars: WWI & WWII

EA2 Example Evaluate the significance of economic factors in the rise to power of one 20th century authoritarian leader. What is the command term? What are the focus words? How would you approach this essay?

Partner Review Discussion When studying 20th century warfare, IB divides the conflicts into different “types” of war (total, limited, guerilla, civil, revolutionary). Is it possible for a war to be multiple types? Why or why not? Think of some examples!!! How did WWII impact European empires & colonies? Who was Charles de Gaulle? Despite European powers giving independence to colonies, France was willing to go to war to maintain control of Algeria. Make a prediction  why do you think this is? What would cause France to maintain tight control of Algeria?

Case Study #1: The Algerian War Decolonization War Revolutionary War Civil War Guerrilla War

Introduction to Guerrilla Warfare Read pages 18-19 and answer the following questions in your notes: How does guerrilla war differ from conventional war? List the strategies and tactics of a guerrilla army. (Include how they acquire supplies) What factors lead a movement to use guerrilla war? What challenges does guerrilla war pose for occupying forces? Summarize decolonization.

Brief Overview 1954-1962 Decolonization War (impacted by WWII) Started in November 1954 with an insurrection led by the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) Eventually became a three way conflict between: Algerian nationalists (Fehrat Abbas & Ben Bella - FLN) French gov (Organisation de l'armée secrète – OAS) European colonists (Pieds-Noirs) Algeria was seen as an integral part of France and citizens were required to “assimilate” Religious, political & economic oppression Characterized by use of guerilla warfare, terrorism, and torture by both sides Millions of Algerians were killed or displaced Caused significant political changes in France

HOMEWORK: due Block 2! Read pgs. 21-29 Annotation check tomorrow! Focus notes on: Long Term Causes Short Term Causes Combatants Strengths vs weaknesses How war was fought (Tactics, strategies, methods, etc.)
