INTRODUCTION Because there has been such a strong emphasis on math, fourth graders today are taught math by applying real life applications and problem solving. Fourth grade is the time when the children learn math procedures that they will carry with them throughout their lives. They are also the core for the math that they will be taught through the rest of their school years. So the whole foundation of fourth grade math is built around real world processes and problem solving. Fourth grade math may focus more on how you got that answer rather than the answer itself. Yes, there are a lot of rules to remember when it comes to math, this is true, but memorizing rules is completely different from understanding why a certain process occurred.

OBJETIVES My fourth (4th) grade students will use the order of operations to evaluate expressions. They will: 1. learn the order of operations. 2. understand the need for the order of operations. 3. evaluate numerical expressions (with no grouping symbols) correctly using the order of operations. 4. translate simple word problems into numerical expressions.

What Is the Order of Operations? Hello! My name is Maria and I live with my wonderful Aunt Lolita. . My Aunt Lolita does a great job of raising me. She fixes my meals, cleans the house and tucks me in at night. However, Aunt Sally often gets the order of these events mixed up. For example, yesterday my Aunt Lolita cleaned the house, tucked me into bed and then made my meals. I keep telling my Aunt Lolita that order is important, but she doesn't seem to understand. Just like in math, there is a particular order that we work problems. Without this order, it is possible that we could all get different answers. The order that we use to simplify expressions in math is called the order of operations. The order of operations is the order in which we add, subtract, multiply or divide to solve a problem.

SEE YOU SOON!

The reason that I have entered the profession lies on my own experiences in school.  Inspired by one teacher. This teacher loved her profession. Added to this inspiration, she made me feel there was something worthwhile which I can give to others. Which I follow her steps, and became an elementary English teacher. This module was designed for fourth graders. It can be integrated with curriculum  for children with normal development  and  those who are at-risk for developing mathematical learning disability.
