EAG346 Geotechnical Design Sem II, 2014/2015 Lesson 1

Instructors Dr M R Selamat (Course Coordinator) Dr Harris Ramli Dr Ashraf Ismail Dr Mastura Azmi

Course Outcomes   (Relate Geotechnical Engineering theories and principles to design solutions) Menghubung antara teori dan prinsip Kejuruteraan Geoteknik dengan hasil rekabentuk   (Analyze components of Geotechnical Engineering Design problems and carry out the necessary designs) Menganalisa komponen masaalah Rekabentuk Kejuruteraan Geoteknik dan menjalankan rekabentuk Geoteknik   (Justify Geotechnical Engineering Design solutions through reports and presentations) Mempertahan hasil Rekabentuk Kejuruteraan Geoteknik melalui laporan dan pembentangan Note: The Geotechnical Engineering Design problems said above cover Slope, Retaining Wall, Shallow Foundation, Deep Foundation, Fill, and Mitigation against Erosion and Sedimentation

Assessment Component Marks Note Quiz/test/ (Ujian) 30% 20% Individual assessment Individual/Group assessment 2. Assignments – towards completing the mini project (Tugasan) 3. Mini project with a final report and final presentation (VIVA) (Projek) 50% Report: Group assessment Final Presentation (VIVA): Individual assessment Attendance Final mark will be deducted by absence

Problem You will be given a cross sectional profile where a slope will be cut, a retaining wall will be erected on a position on the slope, and a fill will be laid at the adjoining ground. The Site Investigation (SI) data for points along the cross sectional profile will be provided. You will design the: 1. Slope 2. Retaining Wall 3. Foundation for Retaining Wall 4. Fill – Uniformly distributed fill covering large area 5. Erosion and sedimentation control measures

DESIGN: Slope Retaining Wall Foundation Fill Erosion and Sedimentation Control

Lecture by Dr Gue See Siew – Foundation on Soft Ground NOTICE: Lecture by Dr Gue See Siew – Foundation on Soft Ground 4 Mac, 2015, 2.30 pm AUDITORIUM/DK4 PPKA

example from a previous year - a conceptual cross sectional profile of project site Soil Bed Rock Clay Sand Bed Rock

Example from past years - a slope was cut, a retaining wall constructed, and a fill laid Berm Batter Face Soil Platform 1 Retaining Wall Platform 2 Fill Bed Rock Clay Sand Bed Rock

Slope Terms Batter face Berm Berm Drain Crest Toe Batter Face Crest

Slope Analyses Factor of safety against local failure Factor of Safety against global failure

Global Failure Local Failure

Cut Slope vs. Fill Slope Fill slope normally is stronger Why?

Retaining Wall Terms Backfill Base Heel Stem Toe Stem Backfill Heel

Retaining Wall Analyses Stability against sliding Stability against toppling Stability against bearing failure Shallow foundation Deep foundation (piles) Stability against settlement

Fill (or Embankment) Fill Fill Slope Geotextile Sand Cushion Fill

Fill Analyses Total settlement Time rate settlement Remedial measures Fill (Embankment) Slope Factor of safety against local failure Factor of safety against global failure

Fill vs Embankment Fill cover large area Embankment cover small area or a strip such as for highway or bund Stress increase under a fill is constant with depth, why? Stress increase under an embankment changes with depth and lateral position, why?

q = Dq

DESIGN: Slope Retaining Wall Foundation Fill Erosion and Sedimentation Control

Now remember course outcomes? Menghubung antara teori dan prinsip Kejuruteraan Geoteknik dengan hasil rekabentuk (Relate Geotechnical Engineering theories and principles to design solutions)   Menganalisa komponen masaalah Rekabentuk Kejuruteraan Geoteknik dan menjalankan rekabentuk berkaitan (Analyze components of Geotechnical Engineering Design problems and carry out the necessary designs)   Mempertahan hasil Rekabentuk Kejuruteraan Geoteknik melalui laporan dan pembentangan (Justify Geotechnical Engineering Design solutions through reports and presentations) Note: The Geotechnical Engineering Design problems said above cover Site Investigation, Retaining Wall, Slope, Shallow Foundation, and Deep Foundation

Grouping of Students Marks will be counted from Tests/Quiz/Attendance Assignments Mini Project + Final Presentation (VIVA) For Mini Project + Final Presentation (VIVA) Each group will consist of 5 students Each student in every group will get involve in all work Each student will receive personal grade
