Early Pacific War Japanese Aggression

Japan in China Japan had been fighting in China since 1933 By 1940, they held much of Northern China and key industrial centers International community does little- Germany does aid China a little bit (until they make an alliance with Japan)

Invasion of French Indochina Japan invades French held “Indochina” (modern day Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia) In response, Allied powers enforce trade sanctions against Japan; Oil, Iron Ore and Steel Japan desperately needs these resources; cannot survive without Japan must either give up its empire or obtain resource-rich areas to sustain itself

Who Has the Advantage? United States Japan 1940 Population: 132 Million 1940 Aircraft Production: 13,000 Five times more steel production and seven times more coal production Production gap would increase 1940 Population: 73 Million 1940 Aircraft Production: 5,000 Slightly more carriers available at the beginning of the war and the best fighter plane on the planet: the Zero Element of surprise

Japan’s Plan Naval and Aerial “Blitzkrieg”- knock out America’s formidable pacific fleet and capture key areas of the South Pacific in a matter of months Complete a defensive perimeter guarded staunchly by Japanese Army, Navy and Airforce Negotiate peace after securing necessary resources, establish and legitimize Japanese hegemony in Asia They know that “complete victory” against US in preposterous

Pearl Harbor Japanese carrier fleet surprise attacks US naval base in Hawaii Tactical victory for Japan; massive US casualties and loss of several battleships Strategic disaster for Japan- does not destroy any US carriers or destroy oil reserves on the island

Victories in the South Pacific Japan attacks and captures Philippines, Dutch East Indies, Malaya; also makes alliance with Thailand Defeats US on ground in the Philippines at Bataan and at sea at the Battle of the Coral Sea Surprise attacks with much ferocity
