UN Environment Assembly The world's highest-level decision-making body on the environment, will gather in Nairobi, Kenya, from 4-6 December 2017 under the overarching theme of pollution. The UN Environment Assembly has the universal membership of all 193 UN Member States and the full involvement of UN organizations, specialized agencies, inter-governmental organizations, civil society and the private sector.  Three events will take place in Nairobi in the week ahead of the Assembly: 29 November - 1 December: The Committee of Permanent Representatives will hold its third open-ended meeting. 2-3 December: Civil society will host the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum, which facilitates the participation of civil society in the Environment Assembly and associated meetings. 2-3 December: The Science Policy Forum will engage policymakers, scientists, researchers, and civil society stakeholders in a discussion on the science required to deliver on the environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

UNEA documents and actions This year’s Assembly aims to deliver a number of tangible commitments to end the pollution of our air, land, waterways, and oceans, and to safely manage our chemicals and waste. These will include the following:   A political declaration on pollution, linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, to signal that humanity can work together to eliminate the threat of pollution and the destruction of our planet Resolutions and decisions adopted by Member States to address specific dimensions of pollution Voluntary commitments by Governments, private sector entities and civil society organizations to clean up the planet The Clean Planet Charter, a collection of public commitments to end pollution in all its forms http://www.unep.org/environmentassembly/clean-planet-charter

Draft Outline Document for the Ministerial Outcome Document of the 2017 UN Environment Assembly “Towards a Pollution-Free Planet” This draft outline has been prepared by the President of the Assembly for consideration by Member States and stakeholders. It includes a structured list of initial points shared by the President with all Members of the Assembly on 8 May 2017 and Member States and stakeholders are invited to continue to share their views and contributions. Member States, including through their respective regional Ministerial Fora and political groups, are invited to send their inputs to the Secretariat (unep.sgb@unep.org) at the latest by the 30 June 2017. Draft Resolutions Input No: 02 Member State: United States Subject Matter: Lead in Paint Date Received 27 April, 2017 Despite general agreement that lead in paint causes serious health problems and adverse economic impacts and that there are specific legal solutions that most countries can implement, only 30 percent of countries currently have lead in paint laws. Input No: 03 Member State: Norway Subject Matter: Marine Litter and Microplastics Date Received 30 April, 2017 Marine litter is one of the largest environmental problems of our time and we are pleased with the increased awareness and action that has taken place since UNEA-1 when the first resolution was adopted. We see scope for further urgent action to be taken by UNEA-3. This Inputwill build on and add value to the action taken by UNEA-1 and UNEA-2. Input No: 09 Member State: European Union and its UN Member States Subject Matter: Urban Pollution Date Received: 15 May, 2017 Following rapid urbanization globally, cities are increasingly relevant, both in generating pollution and finding synergetic solutions – this is the basis of urban pollution. The New Urban Agenda identified pollution as one of the main urban challenges.
