Positive Horse Identification Microchip and Age Verification

Benefits of Positive Identification Improves consumer confidence during horse sales Improves monitoring horse movement during times of disease outbreaks Supports horse welfare through identity verification in horse neglect, abuse or drugging cases, as well as in instances of theft or natural disaster Provides a means to verify the age of a horse competing in age-restricted classes Supports efforts to increase sport participation

Associated Costs of Identification Microchipping costs vary, beginning at $20 There are no costs to keep microchip info “current” Costs can be minimized by scheduling microchipping during a time when the vet is coming to draw blood for your horse’s annual Coggins or routine vaccinations Microchips can be purchased in bulk for $5 to $8 directly from microchip manufacturing companies Registration costs for age verification with breed organizations vary, beginning at $99

Positive ID Rules: Age and Microchipping Rules beginning to take effect for the 2018 competition year will require microchipping for horses seeking points and then for all horses competing in 2019 (HU 101, JP 100, EQ 103) New rules in effect for 2017 require age verification for Young Hunters and Jumpers (GR 313.6, GR 1131.3 and HU 103.1)

Positive ID Rules: Microchipping PHASE I: Microchipping Required for Points Beginning in competition year 2018 (December 1, 2017), all horses competing in USEF-licensed and/or USHJA-sanctioned competitions with Hunter, Hunter Breeding, Jumper and Hunter/Jumping Seat Equitation classes not restricted by breed will be required to be microchipped to receive points. PHASE II: Microchipping Required for Competition Beginning in competition year 2019 (December 1, 2018), ALL horses competing in USEF-licensed and/or USHJA- sanctioned competitions with Hunter, Hunter Breeding, Jumper and Hunter/Jumping Seat Equitation classes not restricted by breed will be required to be microchipped.

Microchipping Process Microchipping Process (recommend this be conducted by a veterinarian): Horse should be properly identified and checked for an existing microchip with a reader If no chip is present, a microchip should be implanted in the nuchal ligament, halfway between the poll and the withers on the left side of the horse Check the chip with a reader to verify it is still readable Photo credit: Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital

Microchip Recording Ways to Report Your Horse’s Chip Number to USEF: Online by signing into your My USEF My Way account and updating your horse’s record Faxing to (859) 231-6662 or emailing to horseservices@usef.org the Microchip Reporting Form, which may be used to report chip numbers for multiple horses Completing the microchip field on a USEF Horse Recording/ID Application If your horse is not yet recorded with USEF or registered with the USHJA, you will need to complete a Horse Recording Form AND fill out the microchip number field on that form

Positive ID Rules: Age Verification For classes that require age verification, age can be verified only through the following identification documents: Registration papers or a passport issued by a World Breed Federation Sport Horse (WBFSH) recognized registry Registration papers or Certificate of Pedigree from a breed or sport horse registry

Myths and Facts – Age Verification Age verification is a difficult process Age verification requires only the horse’s name, USEF/USHJA ID number, and one of the following: registration papers or a Certificate of Pedigree from a breed or sport horse registry, or registration papers or a passport from a World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses recognized registry Age verification documentation can be submitted to a competition Information must be submitted through your MY USEF My Way account online or by mailing or faxing a copy of the papers or passport, along with the horse’s name and number, to USEF Age verification is now required for all competition Age verification only applies to age-restricted classes at USEF-rated competitions It is expensive to register horses with breed organizations and requires inspection Registration costs can be as low as $99 and many organizations accept registration online or by mail
