Eggs- Female ovum Ovaries- female sex glands that store the ova and produce female sex hormones Uterus- The hollow, muscular, pear shaped organ that nourishes and protects a fertilized ovum until birth Ovulation- Process of releasing a mature ovum into the fallopian tube each month Fallopian tubes- a pair of tubes with fingerlike projections that draw into the ovum

Vagina- a muscular, elastic passageway that extends from the uterus to the outside of the body Menstruation- The shedding of the uterine lining Cervix- the opening of the uterus

Functions of the FRS Produces the female sex hormones- Estrogen and Progesterone Storing of the females eggs

Menstruation What is it? The shedding of the uterine lining Why does it occur? After a female matures, the uterus prepares each month for possible pregnancy

The Menstrual Cycle Day 1-8: The cycle begins with the first day of menstruation. Day 9-13: The egg matures in one of the ovaries

Day 14: Ovulation occurs- release of the mature egg into the fallopian tube Days 15-28: The egg travels through the fallopian tube to the uterus.
