Presentation transcript:

Imagine you work for a company that makes stink bombs. A toy shop is interested in selling your stink bombs but wants to know how they work. Write a reply to the toy shop explaining how stink bombs work Draw a particle diagram to show how your stink bomb works 5 minutes What do you think are the learning objectives for today’s lesson?

Identify substances that move into and out of cells. My learning outcomes are to… TO DESCRIBE the process of diffusion TO EXPLAIN how diffusion takes place in cells . I will show success by… Carry out a diffusion practical and analyse your results. Demonstrate an understanding of concentrations related to diffusion. Identify substances that move into and out of cells. Write down one question that you would like to be able to answer by the end of the lesson.

Watch the video and answer the questions below. 1. What is diffusion? 2. How does diffusion take place? 3. How is diffusion related to cells? 4. Why does oxygen move into the cell? 5. Why does carbon dioxide move out of the cell? What factors do you think might affect the rate of diffusion and why?

DON’T FORGET your units! 1. Measure out 25ml of Hydrochloric acid using a measuring cylinder and pour into the 100ml beaker. 2. Stand your beaker on a white sheet of paper. 3. Collect a square of coloured agar gel using forceps. 4. Place the coloured agar gently into the beaker of water and start the stop watch. 5. Write down your observations at 2minute intervals for 10 minutes in a results table Hydrochloric Acid Observations Time 2 6 10 4 8 DON’T FORGET your units! 5 minutes Create a TABLE with the time and observations recorded.

What substances move in and out of an animal cell? Why do you think that substances have to move into and out of an animal cell? energy oxygen glucose carbon dioxide water Respiration is a chemical reaction that takes place in all cells to make energy. What substances move in and out of an animal cell?

Energy Oxygen Carbon Dioxide Glucose Water Glucose and oxygen are carried around the body in the blood. They then pass into the cells that need them. Energy Oxygen Carbon Dioxide Glucose Water Carbon Dioxide is produced during respiration. It passes out of the cell into the blood, which takes the carbon dioxide to the lungs where it is breathed out.

What happens to a plant cell if it doesn’t get enough water? Why do you think that substances have to move into and out of a plant cell? light energy carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen chlorophyll Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction that takes place in the leaves of plants to make glucose. What happens to a plant cell if it doesn’t get enough water?

If plants are not watered regularly they wilt. Water fills up the vacuole within cells, pushing outwards on the cell wall making the cell rigid. This helps the plant stay upright. If the plant does not have enough water the vacuole shrinks causing the cells to become floppy and the plant wilts.

Imagine that you need to teach a lesson on diffusion in cells Design a image or diagram of the key ideas about cells and diffusion that you would give pupils to support them in the lesson 6 minutes

What is the BEST definition for Diffusion? Diffusion is the movement of gas particles. Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of low concentration. Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of low concentration to high concentration. Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to low concentration.

Which of the statements below is FALSE? Diffusion is quicker at higher temperatures Diffusion occurs in all states of matter Diffusion occurs quickest in gases The bigger the difference in concentration the quicker diffusion happens.

Write the different substances into the correct part of the table to show whether they diffuse into or out of the cell. Diffuse In Diffuse Out

My learning outcomes are to… TO DESCRIBE the process of diffusion TO EXPLAIN how diffusion takes place in cells Have a go at answering the question that you wrote down at the start of the lesson.
