What were two of the precedents set by George Washington? He appoints the first cabinet who will serve as his advisors. Set a 2 term limit for Presidents He was against forming political parties Set a policy of neutrality- the US would not interfere with other countries’ problems

What does it mean when the president has a “loose interpretation” of the Constitution? The president will feel like he can make decisions for the country that are not in constitution, but he thinks are necessary and proper

A tax on goods that are imported from another country What is a tariff? A tax on goods that are imported from another country

Why did Hamilton like tariffs? He thought they would stop people from buying foreign goods. He thought people would buy goods made in America and that would help American business grow.

What were two of the three ideas in Hamilton’s economic plan? 1 The national government assuming the state debts 2 the chartering of a National Bank 3 The passage of a high protective tariff

What was the XYZ Affair? President Adams had criticized the French Revolution, so France began to break off relations with the U.S. Adams sent delegates to meet with the French foreign minister in the hopes of working things out. Three of the prime minister’s men told the American delegates that they could meet with prime minister only in exchange for a very large bribe. The agents told the Americans that the prime minister requested a $250,000 dollar bribe.The Americans did not pay the bribe.

What were the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions? They were written by Jefferson & James Madison. They said that states can nullify, or ignore federal laws they considered to be unconstitutional

What was the Alien Act? President Adams increased the resident requirements. He could deport people he didn’t like.

What was the Sedition Act? President Adams said that people could not criticize the govt. It was illegal. The would get fines and imprisonment .

What was the Embargo Act? England was impressing American sailors. Jefferson instead of going to war decided to use economic tactics. He passed an embargo which said we would not import or export goods. It was unpopular because it hurt the economy badly.
