Challenges for the New Nation The United States Faced significant foreign and Domestic Challenges under Washington!

Key Terms and Key People Key terms French Revolution Neutrality Proclamation Privateers Jay’s Treaty Pinkney’s Treaty Battle of Fallen Timbers Treaty of Greenville Whiskey Rebellion Key People Little Turtle

Stuck in the Middle Inspired by the Revolutionary War, The people of France overthrew their government America supported France’s push to become a democracy but were worried about their violent uprisings When France and Britain went to war, America chose to remain neutral under the Neutrality Proclamation rather than getting involved overseas Washington would also resist letting France use American Privateers against Britain

French Fried Hamilton and Jefferson remained Torn between who to side with in the French Revolution Jefferson wanted to side with France because France had helped us in the American Revolution Hamilton wanted to support the British because they were our biggest trade Partner Thomas Jefferson would resign from Washington’s Cabinet because He thought Hamilton had interfered too much with the position of Secretary of State

Jay Walking The United States became increasingly upset with the capture of American Ships in the French West Indies and interfering with Native American Affairs and sent John Jay to negotiate a Treaty with Britain Under Jay’s Treaty America would repay war debts owed to the British while Britain would leave forts in the Northwest and Pay for damages to seized American ships The Northerners dislike the treaty because the punishments to Great Britain were not severe enough and the south disliked that Britain did not have to repay them for lost slaves

That’s how you do a Treaty! Spain began to cause problems in the South and closed the Port of New Orleans to trade Thomas Pinckney was sent to discuss the problems with Spain, looking to reopen the port of New Orleans and get rid of the fees to Transfer goods at the Port Pinckney’s Treaty established the Border of Spain and American Territory at the 31st Parallel and reopened the port of New Orleans without the Fees

It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World As Americans began to settle into the Northwest, Native Americans, led by Chief Little Turtle, began to fight back with weapons supplied by the British General “Mad Anthony” Wayne was sent to the Northwest(Ohio) to fortify the area and begin to mobilize troops against the Native Americans The British Stopped Aiding the Native Americans against the United States and were Brutally Defeated at the battle of Fallen Timbers The Native Americans Agreed to the Treaty of Greenville, gaining most of the Native American Territories in the Northwest, as well as safety, for $20,000 worth of goods and a promise to keep their remaining Territory

A weak Rebellion Washington And Hamilton passed a tax on Whiskey which was seen as a threat to the farmers who used it for trade Protesters in Pennsylvania began to protest the tax and refused to pay it which led to the Whiskey Rebellion The rebellion was seen as a threat to the Federal government and Washington needed to show the government had the power to enforce the laws it passed Washington Mobilized, and led, 13,000 troops to enforce the tax, and most of the Rebels fled ending the rebellion without conflict

So Long…Farewell…Auf Wiedersehen…Good Bye After Two Terms of President, George Washington decided to retire and remind the people they were the countries true leaders Washington gave THREE warnings in his Farewell address: Avoid Entering Into foreign Alliances Avoid the Formation of Political Parties Avoid too much Public Debt
