AND AFTER INSTALLATION Technical Director, NASSCO MINIMUM QUALITY ASSURANCE GOALS BY THE TRAINED INSPECTOR BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER INSTALLATION by Lynn E. Osborn, P.E. Technical Director, NASSCO

Material Quality Key installation materials confirmed before and during construction: Resin CIPP Tube information, before installation Polyester Vinyl ester Epoxy * Associated Polymer Labs

Resin Quality Verifiable industry standard material as required in contract Verified by performing a spectroscopic analysis of the resin Matching the fingerprint of the supplied resin with the fingerprint of the specified resin Monitor wet out information, before installation

Example of Resin Fingerprint

Resin Quantity In many cases the resin is the CIPP Unless fiberglass or carbon fiber are added for enhanced physical properties, the felt tube material is only a mechanism for distributing the resin and holding it in place to control final thickness The inspector is trained to verify resin quantity installed to meet the contract requirements specified. Typically 85% resin to 15% felt. By reviewing the wet out report and the material supplier’s resin saturation charts

Example CIPP Wet-Out Report

Tube Quality Verifiable industry standard material as required in contract Visually checked, typically before and/or during wet out Stored in accordance with tube manufacturer’s recommendations Checked for damage: Holes, rips, tears, weathered or abraded areas. Repaired in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations or discarded if not repairable Labs , before installation

Installation Quality Trained inspector can determine if host pipe is acceptable for CIPP installation Based on ASTM or specified standards Or if additional preparation and/or cleaning is required.

Curing Curing the wet out liner is a critical process in producing a quality CIPP. The trained inspector understands what it takes to cure a liner based on the manufacturer’s suggested requirements and for different field conditions. Curing can be monitored either from digital readers or from a computer, recording the curing time and temperatures. Actual cure schedule can be compared to the recommended cure schedule

CIPP Cure Monitoring Digital read outs from thermocouples Computer output from continuous temperature monitoring

Service Reconnections All service connections re-opened to contract requirements including size and quality of the cut. Requires trained and experienced cutter operator Equipment available today to effectively cut smooth connection Connection should not have hangi g material or shark teeth remaining in the final cut

Quality Verification After Installation Visual quality Physical properties Dimensional conformance Resistance to corrosion Leakage

Conclusion All Quality Controls, Testing and Inspection Requirements must be Specifically Defined in the Contract Documents
