Directions Please restate the question as part of your answer, and be sure to write in complete sentences. If a question has more than one part, please be sure to answer each part or only partial credit will be received.

Questions 1, 2, & 3 (of 10) Who is the protagonist of the story and who is the antagonist? What is the major conflict in the story, what type of conflict is it, and how is it resolved? What is the meaning of Carpe Diem? Provide three examples from the plot that best represent this theme.

Questions 4, 5, & 6 (of 10) What is the major theme of the plot? Name two characters who best represent transcendentalist ideals and give one example for each character of those ideals? Identify three symbolic scenes in the story and explain what each symbolized.

Questions 7, 8, & 9 (of 10) Identify the three W’s of the setting for the story. What is the moment in the story when the plot goes in a different direction? What type of figure does Neal represent and how is it symbolic?
