I/UCRC Biennial Directors' Meeting “Becoming a facilitator. Becoming someone who brings faculty and industry together. Becoming a lawyer all the time. Being a tech transfer officer. Becoming a contracts and grants negotiator… I do all the negotiations before I hand it over to anybody, because they will screw it up 9 times out of 10.” Focus group participant, 2012 study on I/UCRC center directors July 28, 2017 I/UCRC Biennial Directors' Meeting

I/UCRC Biennial Directors' Meeting Elyse Rosenbaum, Center for Advanced Electronics through Machine Learning “CAEML” Me: Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign First-time director of a research center CAEML: Three-university I/UCRC Illinois (lead) Georgia Tech NCSU Hatched in May 2015 Planning grant awarded March 2016 Planning meeting held November 2016 Phase 1 award made August 2016 Kick-off meeting October 2016 Project funding starts January 2017 9 faculty members received funding in year 1 First, semiannual meeting April 2017 12 member companies; actively working to recruit more July 28, 2017 I/UCRC Biennial Directors' Meeting

Pointers for Organizing an IAB Meeting Don’t neglect the details Hotel room blocks Power cords Guest wifi access Slide decks loaded and checked in advance Meeting room reservations (presentations, IAB meetings, poster sessions) Dinner reservations Lunch orders Name badges Hand-outs Delegate to an experienced and competent staff person Distribute project executive summaries to IAB at least 2 weeks in advance Allocate time for in-depth technical discussions and networking Poster session is an opportunity Mingle Site directors need to listen to industry re: needs and interests July 28, 2017 I/UCRC Biennial Directors' Meeting

I/UCRC Biennial Directors' Meeting IAB Meeting, cont’d Give the faculty templates for their research proposals and presentations A consistent appearance and format are important – you want to make a good presentation Advance submission required; edit and return for revision Solicit advice from your center’s assigned “evaluator” (oops, I can’t remember the new title) This person wants you to succeed and has experience with I/UCRC Have a cocktail hour Advice we received at boot camp that proved to be spot-on Pre-select a strong and committed IAB chairperson Ideally, someone with prior experience as a liaison to university researchers “Committed,” e.g. our chairperson holds telecons with the IAB reps between the semiannual meetings & stays in touch with the director July 28, 2017 I/UCRC Biennial Directors' Meeting

Between Meeting Engagement Ask IAB to assign mentors (from multiple companies) to each funded project Engineers with topic-specific expertise, not necessarily the IAB reps Student summer internships!!! Alert member companies when you will be traveling to their city; offer to visit Arrange speaking opportunities at member companies for participating faculty Newsletter Not yet clear whether this is effective – remember, CAEML is a new center July 28, 2017 I/UCRC Biennial Directors' Meeting
