Why did we want to be part of the Fairtrade? Jack McConnell’s Scotland-Malawi Partnership Consortium of 9 colleges joined together to deliver leadership and quality workshops in Lilongwe, Malawi during 2009-2010 Namitete Technical College How could we help our colleagues in Malawi; in the orphanages; and in the colleges? Until this time, students left college with theoretical concepts, but not ACTUAL USEFUL competencies – for instance how to solve problems, how to work in teams, how to problem solve,

GOAL 1 INSTATE A FORMAL FAIRTRADE POLICY FOR THE COLLEGE AND STUDENT UNION Submitted a Joint application Approved by our Steering Group Appoved by Board and Senior Management

GOAL 2 SELL FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS, INCLUDING FOOD AND COTTON, IN ALL CAMPUS SHOPS Involve Catering Manager Involve Student Union

GOAL 3 SERVE FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS AT ALL MEETINGS AND EVENTS HOSTED BY THE COLLEGE AND STUDENT UNION Catering Manager should ensure that Fairtrade products are supplied Staff across college campuses asked to consider changing to Fairtrade products

GOAL 4 CAMPAIGNS ARE RUN ON COMPUS TO INCREASE THE UNDERSTANDING AND CONSUMPTION OF FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS Run events during “Fairtrade Fortnight” and throughout the year Embedding Fairtrade into the curriculum all year – all levels of learners Involve internal and external stakeholders

GOAL 5 SET UP A FAIRTRADE STEERING GROUP WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM STUDENT BODY, COLLEGE STAFF, CATERING AND PROCUREMENT Chair – Meets at least 4 times per year + ad hoc Procurement Manager SU President and his team Catering Manager Bursary Officer Estates Manager 2 representatives from Falkirk Council – Fairtrade Steering Group and Sustainability Officer

ADDED VALUE TO THE LEARNERS Change of College Culture Acceptance of independent responsibility in making Fairtrade choices Social Awareness of the impact that Fairtrade has on poor countries whose products we enjoy Ethical Awareness of production and trading Global economics – international trade system Sustainability and Environmental issues All can be embedded into all subjects, at every level
