Figure 1 Serum iron curves. Serum iron curves after ingestion of a meal containing 13.1mg iron (mean±S.E). IDA (○; n=10) versus HH (●; n=12) P=0.54; heterozygous subjects (■; n=7) versus controls (▴; n=14) P=0.65; and HH versus controls P<0.0001. Figure 2 Post-prandial non-transferrin bound iron (NTBI). Serum NTBI after ingestion of a meal containing 13.1mg non-haem iron. In HH patients (●; n=5), the increase in serum NTBI approached significance (P=0.06). In the healthy controls (▴; n=6), NTBI was not detected at baseline and there was no post-prandial rise in NTBI (P=0.64). Figure 3 Rates of post-prandial iron absorption calculated using 58Fe data. The rate of post-prandial iron absorption was significantly greater in HH patients (■; n=5) compared with controls (□; n=6) (P<0.05) (mean±S.E).
