(9/11) Unit 1.2 Matter Students will know the characteristics of matter and can analyze relationships between chemical and physical changes and properties. Students will (a) differentiate between physical and chemical changes and properties; (b) identify extensive and intensive properties; (c) compare solids, liquids, and gases in terms of compressibility, structure, shape, and volume; and (d) classify matter as pure substances or mixtures through investigation of their properties.
(9/11) “Physical & Chemical Properties” 1) In your composition book, make a “t” chart, label the left side as “Physical Properties & the right side as Chemical Properties” then write in what you think is a description of what a physical would be and what you think a chemical property would be under each title. 2) Match up the items with what you think is a physical or chemical property in your chart
Physical property is... A physical property is any property that is measurable, whose value describes a state of a physical system. The changes in the physical properties of a system can be used to describe its transformations or evolutions between its momentary states. Physical properties are often referred to as observables.
Physical changes are a change in the physical form of a substance (looks different, but still the same stuff Examples: cutting paper water evaporating sugar dissolving States of matter phase changes between solid - liquid - gas
Chemical Property is A chemistry property of a substance is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition or identity of the substance is changed: Combustibility is an important chemical property to consider when choosing building materials.
Physical vs. Chemical Properties of Matter On a sheet of loose leaf paper: Write a paragraph (5-8 sentences) that introduces chemical and physical properties along with their changes. Give 2 examples (underline these 2) of physical properties and explain why they are physical. Then give 2 examples (circle these 2) of chemical properties and explain how you know they are chemical in nature.
(9/12) evidence of Physical & chemical changes t-chart Keep in mind that ALL matter can undergo changes & that ENERGY is needed to change matter Is it a physical or chemical change? WHY? 2. 1. 3.
WHY are these all physical changes? Because Physical changes are a change in the physical form of a substance. - looks different, but still the same stuff
List all the things you see as Evidence of Chemical Changes in these pictures:
Chemical changes are when a substance changes composition by forming one or more new substances. a new substance is formed with different properties Evidence of a chemical change: Color change (permanent) Increase in temperature (endothermic reaction) Decrease in temperature (exothermic reaction) Light produced Precipitate formed (this is an insoluble solid formed by mixing two liquids) Gas produced (bubbles = gas)
Physical Change vs Chemical Change Lab Safety: (copy this on left side) Wear safety goggles all during lab, even while cleaning up my materials Wear closed-toe shoes (like tennis shoes, boots, etc. that cover toes) Signed safety contract must be turned in to me for this lab Prelab Questions (answer with sentence on left page) What evidence will you look for a physical change? What evidence will you look for a chemical change? 3. What are the possible characteristics to conclude that a new substance has been formed to illustrate chemical change? 4. Do you think the indicators for a chemical change are always reliable? Why or why not? Purpose: (put on right page) The purpose of this lab is to study the difference between physical and chemical changes in matter. Procedures: (follow directions at each station & record your observations)
Purpose: (put on right page) The purpose of this lab is to study the difference between physical and chemical changes in matter. Procedures: (follow directions at each station & record your observations) Data Table: (be sure to complete this as you work in lab & work with your partner so that you both are doing parts to finish collecting data during class time) Station # What chemicals are used Observations before lab Observations during lab & after Physical Change or Chemical Change? How do you know?-Evidence 1 – 6 skip about 2 lines for each
(9/14) Classifying Physical & Chemical Properties *Both physical & chemical can be classified as being either extensive or intensive properties.
