NATO & The Warsaw Pact Handout: Nato and the Warsaw Pact chart background: Two alliances formed at the beginning of the Cold War – NATO, created in 1947, and the Warsaw Pact, created in 1950. NATO was led by the United States; the Warsaw Pact was lEd by the Soviet Union. The US, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Portugal all formed NATO – a military alliance that sought to “…promote stability and well- being in the North Atlantic Area.” After West Germany joined NATO in 1955, the Soviet Union and its satellite states in Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Hungary, East Germany, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia) joined together as their own military alliance, the Warsaw Pact.
