Occupational physical activity & heart attacks Paper compared heart attack incidence in drivers vs conductors It is now more than 50 years since Professor Jerry Morris reported that central London bus conductors who climbed around 600 stairs a day on these routemaster buses were at 30% lower risk of coronary heart disease than the drivers who mainly sat down all day. At the time there was uncertainty as to whether this was really to do with the increased physical activity of the conductors or the stress of the drivers. Also, the results were only adjusted for age. Morris et al (1953) "Coronary heart-disease and physical activity of work". Lancet 265 (6795): 1053–7
